Prices Are Increasing For Everything, Even Pet Medication

Many of you know we have a few small parrots, one of which is a budgie we've had for around 5 years now.

Our budgie was born with avian bornavirus and proventricular dilation disease. This is normally fatal as most people don't notice when their parrots have this.

Thankfully, we noticed something was wrong with our budgie and did our best to manage the issues he was developing until, after calling around, we finally found a really good vet here in California who was able to diagnose and successfully treat it. Our budgie has been on medication he needs to take daily for the rest of his life to manage both the virus and the disease. It's definitely worth it because he's made a full recovery and is a very happy budgie who likes to talka lot (yes, he can speak words!).

For years, this medication costed us $33 every month. However, last month, the price increased from $33 to $72. Not only that, we have to pay for shipping because we live 2 hours away from the vet office (they are literally the only competent avian vet office within 200 miles of us. Trust me, we looked everywhere).

Then this month, the price increased again. We had to spend $105 today because of some new law over here. It's infuriating having to spend so much, but that medication keeps him alive, so we don't have any other choice right now since he needs a refill. It doesn't help that the last refill leaked out of the bottle in transit, either.

It's just shocking how much prices for everything over here have gone up.

The costs of most things have rocketed up.

You should look into discount shops you can save lots of money with them for example last time I ordered saved £150 got free shampoo and other beauty products.

I also live in a strange area where my supermarkets always reduce anything 24/7 for example bought a brand new microwave £11.99

That’s exactly what we’ve been doing. We’ve started shopping at this place called Bargain Outlet and some new stores like Five Below opened up near us. In regards to Bargain Outlet, we always get the same grocers and only spent $80 on stuff that’ll last us throughout the month versus the $300 we’d spend at Target for the exact same stuff.

Yeah, we noticed that with our cat’s food in particular. The 3lb bag of the same cat food we’ve been getting her for the last decade is now $30. I used to buy the same bag for $12 in 2015. It wasn’t even that long ago that it was $18, then the price suddenly jumped up to $30 in the last year or two.

We had a lot of rescue animals at one point, but we’ve been having to rehome them lately because of how ridiculous the pricing for everything has gotten recently. Really, the only ones we can keep now are the parrots and cat, and only because the parrots require too much special care (it’s not just the budgie), and the cat does not like other people at all. They’re also attached to us, so we’ll always keep them.

Not sure if you looked into yet but look into getting buying stock from business shutdown you can every so often get a load of stuff very cheap.

Wait. $80 for groceries for a whole month? Or did I read something wrong? Some other stuff maybe? In Poland that's 3 desserts lol, groceries are way worse than this.

Oh. Too bad you had to give your pets away. Must be hard. But remember you helped them and gave them good life. Poor little bird, it seems to be doing great regardless of its disability, all thanks to you guys. You and @Impulse seem to be passionate about helping these cute little creatures.

Ebay do it semi often.

For example if a health food shutdowns often they sell on it ebay for like £30 worth like £200 or so.

I will give you a good example I paid £20 for a lot of pool cues and cases. I resold it on ebay for like £1,000


You can find them on Google with a bit of searching.

Type in buy bankrupt stock or other related terms and you can find stuff semi quick.

Going into your local area or when travel if you see a shop with like 70% off you can buy their stuff pretty cheap.

The Bargain Outlet is seriously a great deal. It’s also the whole month if you count the fact that neither of us need to eat much and most of what we buy is oat milk, canned food, frozen fruits, and stuff to cook regular meals for the first week we have the groceries.

Speaking of which, my mother was down here recently and she was surprised by how little we eat. We went to a restaurant and had to split the meal and even then we didn’t finish it. Portion sizes here in the US are massive, though.

That’s how we’ve been coming to terms with it. We still have some of the pets as our friend who owns a bird shop is helping us rehome the rest.

We really like helping animals and having them in our home, but in regards to the pets that aren’t attached to us and no longer require special care, it’s far better that they go to someone with the resources to continue looking after them.

Same situation here and across Europe that i've seen. Fixed Interest rates for perosonal customers are hovering around 4.1-4.3% right now and inflation is at 3.6%. So in principle, for every $100,000 you'd save, your money is only adding value of about $600 per year (with which you're expected to pay all your essentials alone - rent, mortgage, food, energy, and so on) if you spend more than this you're actively losing money which already avaerages that loss of 3.6% the moment you do start spending.
And all this without even adding taxes in to the mix whether from a job or not.

System is designed to work against the average joe / try to keep you in debt. But even with that in mind, i'm not sure why the prices are sky rocketing THAT badly though.

Is this businesses trying to hedge and cash in now because they're not sure about the future or is it that some crucial industries are putting up their prices and setting off chain reactions across the entire markets? Possibly both?

So we need to charge our clients more to cope up the inflation right?

Those cues must be shit.

As a pool and snooker player. I'd call bullshit on that.

Players who play knows cues and values and certain ones hold.

Disagree hard. On turning 20 quid cues to 1000.... More so cases. Cases have sky rocketed no way you found them for that little.

As for costs everything is going up. Can't change it. Some places are worse than others.

Doesn't bother me. Still feed the family, still put fuel in the car, do I grump that stuff costs more than 1990 sure.

But that's life.

Is what it is, nothing will change anytime soon.


As for vets I hate them. There's a monopoly in the UK that 5 companies own something daft like 80-90 all practises despite claims of being a single practise.

Theres an inquest going into it and price fixing.

In terms animal cost. I'll pay for dental work but anything that needs long term medication. We say bye to.

I put together a parts list for the same computer I built two years ago and it’s $339 more now. Even vegetables have gone way up in price. Some of them 300% since 2021.

A laptop of the class of my laptop is cheaper about 30%.
