I've been looking to expand the karma system lately by giving it more of a purpose.

One of these new purposes we're looking into is a Reddit-esque awards system on posts.

Essentially, we will put an award button next to the like button. When you click it, you can purchase an award for the user's post using your karma (and only karma; we keep karma upgrades separate from monetary-based upgrades).

We can even set it up so that a percentage of the karma you spend on the award is given to the user. The exact percentage would need to be worked out, but it won't be 100% since there needs to be a karma-sink for the sake of gamification.

Anyway, what does everyone think about this as a way to give the karma system more of a purpose?

Sounds good, just make sure the poster gets the most of it since he/she is the awarded and did the job of writing a great post, without the user the award system is useless.

Karmehamehaaaaaaa.

Sounds good to me.

Gameification is always epic beans.

I think sounds a good idea but never used Reddit much

I go back and forth with the idea of gamification and how much of it should we apply to a forum that is, at the end of the day, a professional forum.

From one side it's fun, but from the other, does it really make sense to 'headpat' a user you're talking to about your business?

Beyond that, with so many features, we can easily overwhelm new people coming. We saw it recently with people that didn't even understand the trophies and stars they received.

Sounds cool, I think you’d need to do something with how easy karma is to get then though as right now (I know it was easier before) it’s not so easy… you’ve all seen my threads lol

It's hard now because we're just 100 people, but when we have, let's say 1000 active members, reaction will probably flow faster.

I can get it my advice is start talking about talking about ferrets, which seems to be the key trick for hot rod status

Not working so well for you, I see zero hot rods on you sir.

I can buy one today or tomorrow or any date if I want it to be added to my account details.

In terms of professionalism, I've always found that everyone has a different expectation for it and everyone's tolerance for something outside of this expectation is different as well.

Using my own business as an example, I've always been very much aware that the way I run it can come across as childish to some. This is reflected in my surroundings, the way I have meetings with clients, or even the way I set websites up. Despite this, only one client was ever put off by it.

When it comes to an entire forum though, I find it necessary to try new things whilst also trying not to accidentally reinvent the wheel or add something that's too much in. It's why I run even my own suggestions through this voting process.

The overwhelming features aspect is one you've brought up before. I've been looking over the existing features and I've been trying to work out if it's just too many features or if it's too many ill-explained features. By ill-explained features, the karma system is one of those: largely out-of-sight with limited uses. It's why I've been looking into ways of making it feel more like a visible part of the forum rather than something in the background.

Also, it might just be me, but it seems that others expect everything to be feature-rich these days. But whether that's the expectation of the audience we're trying to attract is something that still needs to be determined.

@roydan is right about this. The karma system is slower with fewer active members, but an increase in members was accounted for when it was last re-balanced. Before that, karma was earned way too easily.

Not sure if this fits the bill but it would be nice to see something that would differentiate 'helpfulness' lile a rep system or something from like counts specifically for business related stuff. Something that I always thought was a bit misleading on the other forum too...

Like all some members had to do is say 'good morning' and get two dozen likes but it's often posts of no substance that were getting tonnes of likes and often misleading esp for new members that assume that means they are the 'go to' people when talking business or the stuff they sell or vouch for is inherently better or more reliable which you then find it as absolutely not the case.

A rep system from a like score is something we could look into adding. It would sort of be like how we have the star system for trophies already.

I'll see what options are available for this.
