I just wrote a small thread.

When I used 'X' as a tag, it returned an error saying some tags might be too long or too short and suggested that I remove 'X'.

After I removed it, problem solved.

Maybe add it as an exception for short tags.

Yes, that is something I'm aware of. I'm sure you remember this issue on other Xenforo forums.

So I found a post from one of the Xenforo developers talking about why it's like this. https://xenforo.com/community/threads/usernames-of-length-1-are-not-mentionable.194598/
At this time, I don't think we're going to change anything here. The challenge with mentions is that usernames are entirely arbitrary strings that may include whitespace, for example (and other weird characters). Thus, we have to make some guesses. There is also a compromise in terms of trying to make the match list be as specific as possible to avoid fetching too many names. Allowing a 1 character match is likely to trigger situations that require testing against a huge number of username matches (every name that starts with "a" in this case), whereas a 2 character match can significantly reduce that amount.
It's still on our to-do list to find a solution at some point, but we're going to have until we have a way better server or for Xenforo to find a way to allow this.
