Play Has No Limits — except if you're trying to buy a console. Amidst the dire wastelands of the tech industry, Sony has decided that enjoying its PlayStation 5 console should remain its top priority. Even if you can't pay for one outright, the company will now lease it to you every month with recurring payments, thanks to a local collaboration with Raylo in the United Kingdom called "Flex."

Raylo is a "tech subscription service" in the UK that allows customers to lease all sorts of stuff, including TVs, phones, appliances, and consoles. PS5s were already available on Raylo's site, but this new program, in partnership with PlayStation Direct, makes the process even more accessible. In fact, even this offer has been active since at least March 2025, so the company is simply readvertising here.

Instead of buying from third-party vendors or retailers like Amazon, you can buy PlayStation hardware "directly" from Sony via its online store. Every item sold here is authentic and official, adding another layer of legitimacy to the purchase. Raylo's leasing partnership is limited to PlayStation UK.

Speaking of which, the offer includes four options: 12 months, 24 months, 36 months, and an indefinite rolling plan. The longest lease is the cheapest, starting from £9.95 per month ($13.55) for the base PS5 Slim across 36 months. The most expensive plan is the flexible one, where you pay a flat £19.50 per month ($26.56) for the same PS5 Slim and £37.49 per month ($51.06) for the 2 TB PS5 Pro. Prices vary across hardware.
To me, that sounds crazy. I would never ever do that, knowing that i'd have to give it back in 36 months. Not worth the money. What do you think?

I think it might be a good thing, now families with a limited budget can enjoy it too.

Whoever wants a PS5 and can't afford it should look deeper into their priorities I think.

This whole culture of debt for luxuries is so stupid, and I'm not talking about mortgages or financing a car, I'm talking about credit debts from buying fuckin lebubus and disneyland tickets.

What were we talking about?

Won't work for me

I got gifted PS5 just a few days back

Going to start with Fifa if anyone is up for multiplayer lemme know

I don't have Fifa and I don't play much multiplayer in general, but you can add me if you want

And so it begins?

So you’ll be spending $162.60 (excluding any extra fees and taxes they very much tacked on) to rent a PS5 for their minimum 12 month lease.

At that price point, may as well save up and buy a used PS5 since you can find used units for between $200 to $350.

Totally agree

I'm sure xbox has pitched this idea previously for future consoles and MS as a whole as where they want the PC industry going.

You can half see it now the way they lock out updates forcing the switch when current hardware runs and functions just fine

I remember when Walmart used to do those rent to own layway kind of programs. But actually just renting something like this?

What's next? TV rentals?

rent to own
Rent to own is brilliant I think, saw this the first time for some audio effect plugins and virtual instruments software on a site called splice. Had no idea it went beyond that.

I really like those kind of programs myself. It wasn't all that long ago you could even do rent to own programs with homes, too.

It's a shame because I just don't see them around as often as I used to. It's like they're all being replaced with predatory rent only programs that cost an arm and a leg.

That was very popular in the 1980`s. Renting everything like tv`s, stereo, washing machines and so on.
Yep, I remember this. My uncle's entire home theater setup was 'leased'.. it was a pretty predatory practice suckering in people who wanted the latest and greatest well beyond their financial means.

Console rentals at your local video store were common as well, SNES, Genesis, PS1, etc. While I don't remember the exact cost, I'd wager with adjustment for inflation the yearly cost would have been much much higher than what this company is charging now for the PS5 rentals.

Electronics were extremely expensive in the 80s/90s.. in the last 20 years we saw prices plummet and become much more affordable to your everyday Joe. Unfortunately, this type of stuff targets the exact consumer who doesn't or can't think of saving a year in advance for a used one. Perpetually in a debt loop they can't claw out of. Not a great sign of the economic times.

That kind of thing isn’t something I came across myself back then outside of the occasional guy trying to let someone borrow their TV for cash.

Companies doing it is new to me.

Well, in Europe it has been going on for a while, for example In the 1930s, Austrian Jules Thorn had the idea to rent out radios . The concept later developed into hundreds of stores in England and the rest of the world. Thorn came to Sweden in 1970 and had it`s peak in 1980-1990`s, it is not existing nowadays. So it was a quite popular business model in Europe at least.
