Stupid questions bros but you know how some people cover their webcams when they aren’t using them? You know some people might be watching porn and are paranoid about the webcam getting hacked and ending up on a porn site or getting ransomed or something.

Have you ever known anyone this has happened to? I was thinking on it myself and I’ve not know ln a single person this happened to bros. But you still have people covering their webcams.

No. Real threat isn't being exposed naked, but having all your files encrypted. Who would worry about being exposed naked in the age of onlyfans and AI? Elon Musk maybe. Not me.

My dad was trying to fix my broken webcam(bought refurbished laptop, bag fell off shoulder on first day, f*cked)

was checking through task manager, my camera was actively on and recording

if it wasn't broken broken, I'd probably have cracked up

I'm just wondering how many of our "friends" have naked photos with us on their computers created by AI.

I don't know anyone who's been ran over by a car and died. I still look both ways before I cross the road.

Not personally no. However, back in the day I remember IRC channels that would auto-post the IP and port of open or poorly secured (often default credentials or trojaned) Internet connected webcams scanned through botnets. So the threat-risk is definitely real and still exists today, many business-grade laptops come with physical kill switches and/or covers for this reason.

I have seen people cover their webcams. I don't do this myself, but I can understand their fear. Some RATs have the ability to view a victim's webcam through the software, so it’s not impossible for this to happen. However, I’ve never seen any ransom actually being collected that way (other than through fake emails).

Lucky.

I do. I've also been there to issue cpr to someone who's been hit by a car. Not the best way to go out I don't think.

To the OP did you get one of them:

I saw you wanking emails and you thought fuck?

It's OK ignore them, if they had anything they would send a photo first not a long winded blackmail essay

We know an assistant manager at a bank who said she had a customer turn up with his parents, white as a sheet and shaking like a leaf. Apparently he has not just his mac, but his entire network hacked by islamist hackers. They were constantly harassing him, controlling his devices and telling him to transfer funds, apple gift card and so on. Also bullying him in to converting to Islam and they will release his webcam footage if he didn't comply or if he told anyone.

His parents found out. Obviously got cybercrime and action fraud and trying to reclaim funds he was blackmailed in to handing out. Poor guy :-/

Apparently there is a massive underground hacking scene in Turkey and Iran. And they say with the war right now, some blackhat communities have essentially declared a cyber war against the west. So might be more important than ever to beef up cybersecurity including getting webcam covers. I personally use them on my desktop, laptop and mobile devices. You can pick up like a thirty pack from amazon for like five dollars.
