Last week, Reddit user “Mags_Smash” posted about how Windows suddenly started showing pop-up ads for McAfee antivirus software after connecting an LG monitor to the computer. Over the week, more and more users have confirmed the information, not only on Reddit but also on other forums and in comment threads under news articles about the discovery.

Users have also reported experiencing the same annoying behavior on monitors from Dell subsidiary Alienware, writes Techspot .

The adware is automatically installed via Windows Update and the Microsoft Store when the monitor is connected. Some users point out that the installation is similar to how Asus motherboards can automatically install the company's "Armoury Crate" program, but there is at least a BIOS setting to opt out of the installation. LG monitors do not have such a setting in the menus.

On Linux and Mac OS, there are no features that allow hardware to cause the operating system to automatically install software in this way, so users of those operating systems cannot be affected.

That sucks really.

Who buys an LG monitor when you got Samsung and BenQ
poor, or tech illiterate people like me (I do have LG monitor).

This being said, what's wrong with LG? I see absolutely no difference between LG and my previous monitor (Samsung)... but then again, I do wear glasses, so wtf can I see anyway? :D

I have an Alienware monitor and haven’t experienced this.

Mine is a few years old, so I’m wondering if this is a thing done with new monitors since people are reporting that it’s happening right out of the box.

No offencwbut I wouldn’t touch a LG or Alienware with a 10 foot pole. One is too fucking expensive and the other one you can get a better monitor in the same price range.

Yes at a 10ft range there are better priced screens to maximise viewing at.
