We currently have no advertising page. Hope we see in the near future..

Banner advertisement,
Email blast,
Sticky threads ,
Text links,
Any other additional promotions ..

If you make a Advertising page, please be transparent about prices directly on that page, that is one thing I always hated on the other place that not were transparent and one had to contact sales to find out.

As @Rem said, we won't be doing banner ads on the forum. I don't mind others putting banners ads in their own signature spaces, but I don't feel like it's right for me to shove banner ads in everyone's face. That, and I feel like they'd take away from the experience of using the forum; it's why they're not on my business site these days.

We haven't fully worked out what kind of advertising we'll do because we're still putting all of this together, but I'll go over the ones you listed:
Banner advertisement,
Email blast,
Sticky threads ,
Text links,
Any other additional promotions ..
  • Banner ads - I went over that above.
  • E-mail blasts - I don't want to send these out to anyone who subscribes to the newsletter. I imagine myself signing up for a newsletter, and I'd be annoyed if I were getting sent an advertising e-mail several times a week about a specific sales listing. At most, maybe I can add a section at the bottom of the newsletter where someone can pay to have their sales thread announced, but I would need to work out the details of this.
  • Sticky threads - I think sticky Trading Posts threads are fine, but I'm going to set a hard cap of (maybe 5 per section) and also only allow everyone some to have their thread stickied for a limit amount of time (a month). It's so we don't have the same sales threads at the top of these sections indefinitely. It's also to give others a chance to get the spots.
  • Text links - I'd rather not do this, but I suppose I wouldn't rule it out. I'll have to think on it.
I know the forum needs to be monetised in order to keep it going (and also, so I can focus on it as a job), but I've struggled with advertising because I don't like the way it's done in a lot of places. You know, intrusive or inappropriate ads.

I want to try doing things differently here on OO, and that also applies to any advertising done on the forum. I haven't thought of anything unique yet, though.

Definitely. We're trying to be as transparent as possible even with donations, so advertising would not be an exception to this.

It's a rule in the trading post to display your pricing, so it'd be hypocritical of me to not put pricing for own advertising opportunities directly on the page.

Okay, we have an advertising page up. @Dopious, the pricing in on the page itself as well. There's a link to it in the footer of the forum next to the donate button.

Here's what it says:
Advertising Options Currently Offered & Pricing

Trading Post Stickies
We offer sticky threads for approved listings in The Trading Post.

Stickies are currently priced at $50/week in whichever section your listing is in.

Please note that we cap the number of stickies off at 5 per section. We also only allow someone to book a sticky position for 1 month at a time.

Advertising Options Not Currently Offered

E-mail Mentions

Once we have our newsletter going, we are looking into an option to allow offer up to 4 mentions at the bottom of the newsletter for those looking to promote their approved Office Outlaw listing.

Advertising Options That Are Not Offered
  • Banner Ads: We do not and will not offer ever offer banner advertisements on this forum. Whilst we allow members to put banners in their own signature spaces, we feel that putting official ads on every page takes away from the experience that makes our forum unique.
  • E-mail blasts: Those who subscribe to our newsletter do so to receive a nice summary of events going around our forum for the week. Therefore, we will send out pure advertisements as this is not what our community members want to receive in their inboxes.
  • Section text links: We feel these would take away from the experience of using our forum, so we do not offer them.
Let me know if anything seems wrong with any of this and I'll make adjustments.

Thank you for the suggestion to add this in, @back2form! :)

I'm working on adding more in. I'm actually writing up the template for the OO newsletter, so there might be an opportunity in there as well.

Thank you!

Z, a small suggestion here to consider: we have a more national IM forum that charges for every bump to the homepage. They also have an option to set an automatic bump each day; and the owner is earning pretty good with it. So my suggestion is:

1. Allow the seller to manually bump his thread to the homepage for x credits.
2. Set an auto bump for multiple or X times a day for x credits.

For this; I think it's a good idea to reconsider changing the latest topics as homepage and make a sidebar with the most popular forums. Just my 2 cents.

P.s have a look at Sythe forums; they have an awesome earning model without using the more general advertising models.

For example; they have an option to 'donate' money to the community as a sign of trust. The higher the donation, the more unique the medals, username colors, etc. which brings your team $$$ and the user is building up his trust, so it's likely it will decrease the number of scams.

Back in the days, I reworked this model with their old crew but it worked like a charm. I dunno if it's still feasible nowadays but from a psychological aspects, I would say it's a interesting approach for OO.

These are pretty neat suggestions, @Festinger Vault!

The Trading Post still needs a lot of work, so any more suggestions you have are definitely appreciated!

This is something I'm still looking into. Some want a customisable homepage, some like it the way it is now, and other wants a live feed.

I believe there's a good middle-ground somewhere that should make everyone happy with the homepage. :)

I'll take a look at that later!
