I put this under privacy & security because when I first clicked the article that's what I was thinking it was going to be about.

But it seems it's just a way to enter address information quicker online? Can't really see the point of it, not when auto lookup is getting more popular or things like Link Pay

Japan Post said Monday that it has launched a "digital address" system that links seven-digit combinations of numbers and letters to physical addresses.

Under the system, users can input these seven-digit codes on online shopping websites, and their addresses will automatically appear on the sites.

It essentially like a tracking phone number.

The 7 digits don't change and you submit it instead of your address to your bank, credit card, leasing company, and that when you update your address it just updates it everywhere automatically.

I can see why it's more convenient that way.

IF it works like that sure where you can updated 1 thing and it does it to everything that's registered with that ID.

I didn't think of it like that to be honest. (can now see it's mentioned briefly in the article)

Saves rising around and changing everything I guess, will only be a small % of people that would need that uptake anyway? Wonder how secure it would be to stop someone hijacking it also.

The problem is you need all of those systems to update and accept the new digital ID requirement to be of use. 10 years to promote it is even longer for these companies to update systems as well.

Seems to be a pre cursor for digital ids etc

So it's basically just an ID associated with your address and if you change address, the ID stays the same but the associated address 🤔

Anyhow.. I'm not from Japan 😉

do those 7 digits change when you change address?
what happens for people who have more than 1 address
to me its much easier remembering all my addresses than multiple 7digit numbers lol

No 1 set of numbers you just update the address assigned to the number I think

well on the bright side
could be easier to not get your address wrong whenbuying things
but then again
some post mans in australia are highly retarded if not lazy so
not sure if that would change things

They'll always have that personal stamp so that will stay in place.

Yeah I'd have to check but our internal stats is something like 1 in 340ish customers:

End up missing a house number or entering the wrong post code.

It's something that happens so I could easily imagine having a long digital code errors will and would happen.

And as you said maybe instead of parcel not arriving at all, it ends up going the other side of the country or to someplace else totally

and people who have multiple of the same digits like 4000001 can easily be entered incorrectly with no separators or clear indicators
