Google may be forced to sell Chrome . Last spring, the AI-based search service Perplexity announced that it wanted to acquire Google's browser. Now, Reuters reports that Perplexity has made an offer: $34.5 billion.

The amount is almost double what Perplexity is worth, as the company was recently valued at $18 billion. The bid is also significantly less than what Chrome – the world’s largest browser – is estimated to be worth.

Google, of course, has no interest in selling Chrome and will not release the browser unless the company is forced to. Other players who have said they are interested in buying Chrome include Open AI , Yahoo and the venture capital firm Apollo Global Management. Google has previously claimed that only Google has the ability to run Chrome.

It's valued at 80-90b I think

Don't know how they would manage to raise the money to buy - well I do just can't see it happening.

I'm no expert but, regardless of whether it is a publcity stunt or not, this just makes them appear both over-ambitious, if not a little delusional, and incompetent - putting in a bid for the biggest and most profitable browser in the world at a fraction of it's value like it's some local price is right auction. LOL.

I would love to know is how this would help with Publicity. Hardly inspires confidence in their management.

They just need exposure and this news will trigger discussions among tech users and make it to mainstream news. Nowadays, most people in your niche thinking about your brand for a fraction of a second is worth a million dollars. So, they are successful in getting their brand more exposure and presenting themselves as an ambitious company that's not just another AI project.
