I've been looking to expand the karma system lately by giving it more of a purpose.
One of these new purposes we're looking into is a Reddit-esque awards system on posts.
Essentially, we will put an award button next to the like button. When you click it, you can purchase an award for the user's post using your karma (and only karma; we keep karma upgrades separate from monetary-based upgrades).
We can even set it up so that a percentage of the karma you spend on the award is given to the user. The exact percentage would need to be worked out, but it won't be 100% since there needs to be a karma-sink for the sake of gamification.
Anyway, what does everyone think about this as a way to give the karma system more of a purpose?
