It's at that time now where our current store is coming up to 3 years old and I'm thinking do we need a refresh...

I always think now is the time to jump from our self hosted platform and go to Shopify.. but sitting down and doing the numbers it just seems insane (it's actually the first time I've properly looked because I feel thats where maybe I should be, because everyone else is and I want to be cool)

The store will set me back 259 a month minimum

There is a bunch of modules I need that are all subscription based also? That takes me to min 200 a month on top of that price, I figure time I dive into it, it's going to be MUCH higher.

Then factor in some custom coding and on going support. I just don't get it.

I mean I understand the appeal and I more than get if the business can afford it what's the problem - but I like to keep overheads low and squeeze every penny I can I'm doing the maths now.

My current set up cost me

£1500 a year in hosting and cpanel licence
£6000-10k a year in support and development

If I switch I'm paying out

£3000 (call it) for the platform
£3000+ for modules

Maybe less in support and development but id imagine id still be min 6k plus the move and set up cost will be closer to 40k.. Then I'm stuck there. Constantly shelling out 6k+ a year. My store runs quicker than most Shopify stores anyway so the appeal is lost there.

I just don't get the appeal to switching to Shopify if your a large store when you still have a development team on staff...

I do get the ease of tying into new tech and changes but fuck me. Feels like early 2000s ecom costs all over again.

Convince me otherwise.

Not to mention how inconvenient it is to run a blog on shopify, unless you start running subdomains and who need this clusterfuck..?

I know I'm gonna get shit for liking WP, but me and my teeny tiny clients kinda enjoy the flexibility. Some big clients too, by the way.

Yeah I don't do blogs no more, just content hubs.

But yeah running and managing content on that platform is a clusterfuck BUT that's the same for all ecom platforms really, content is after thought if it ever entered the devs mind that is..

WP is OK.

I remember when it came out and it was just for blogging. So that's how I see it.

Id not want to mange it for what I do but I do know 1 or 2 competitors use it and they probably a bit bigger than me...

It's not for me.
