I got an email from my web host about a failed WordPress upgrade that was automatically reverted because the site behaved erratically.

I've used this feature cause it was left on by default but I've wondered if maybe it's a bad idea to leave on. You know zero day exploits or something like that.

Anyone have any thoughts on this kind of feature?

Would you rather have a "Your site was updated successfully" notification while everything broke?

Website maintenance should be an important part of your action plan. Set aside a few hours every week to test updates and only then deploy them.

A lot of bloated plugins have a bad history of breaking sites during auto updates (looking at you Elementor).

And since you got an email that said the changes were reverted, seems like you're on a managed hosting service.

So now you should investigate why updating breaks your site, and then run the update manually.

Start by building websites with a stack of proven (not glorified) plugins and themes and you will be fine with automatic updates, I use automated updates on all my sites, never had a problem thru decades of sites.
