I often hear about domain registrars who, free you search for a domain, will then register that domain so that you have to pay them more to buy it.

I’ve never actually come across this, but what domain registrars actually do this? I only want to know so that I can avoid them in the future.

They don't exist anymore but Google Registear transfered my domains to Squarespace when they shut their registrar business. Broke my DNS records and it was a nightmare even trying to login to a squarespace account I never even asked for or reach out to help solve peristent and obscure technical errors. Avoided Squarespace ever since

Jeez I remember square space. A bunch of small businesses used their card reader at one point. I looked into it, saw the fees they were charging, and closed that site. Complete joke of a company.

You just reminded of first domain I purchased. Which was through Network Solutions who charged me two years consecutively for a domain I didn't want to renew. Stopped only when I said i'd take further action adter second year.

Never bought a domain from them, but heard terrible things about godaddy. Some people have been convinced they scanned or sold user queries to snap up domain ideas lol. I just didn't bother with them out of principle because of how bad other products i've used of there's were - which resulted in site getting hacked, seemingly on an infrastructural level.
