Statcounter has released updated figures on market shares for different operating systems and software. For the different versions of Windows, September offers a big surprise.

Windows 11 fell slightly to 48.95 percent, from a record 53.51 percent in August. Windows 10 continued to fall, going from 45.53 to 40.50 percent. But wait a minute , the friend of order asks. That doesn't even make 90 percent together, what's the use of the rest?

The answer, according to Statcounter's statistics, is Windows 7. The old system had already increased slightly between July and August, but has now jumped from 3.59 to 9.61 percent of the Windows market.

Microsoft released the last regular update for Windows 7 in January 2020 and the last extended update for organizations that paid for the ESU program in January 2023. Since then, the company has released a couple of emergency updates to patch really serious security flaws, most recently in July 2024.

It is unclear whether the numbers point to a real increase in the number of Windows 7 users or whether Statcounter's method of measuring usage has problems.

It des blow my mind why people are more willing to roll back to old, badly or completely unsupported proprietary systems than robust, modern systems with massive community support like linux or some bad based systems. I wonder what the benefit is?
