Maldives tells UK it does not recognise Chagos Islands deal

   The Chagos Islands are a group of small islands in the Indian Ocean. They are important because they have a big military base on one island called Diego Garcia, which is used by the UK and the US.
2. Who wants the islands?
   • The UK currently controls the islands.
   • Mauritius, a nearby country, says the islands belong to them and wants the UK to give the islands back.
   • The Maldives, another nearby country, says, "Wait! We don’t agree with this plan because we think the islands belong to us, not Mauritius."
3. Why is there a disagreement?
   A long time ago, the UK took control of the islands from Mauritius when Mauritius was still a colony. Now, Mauritius wants the islands back because they say the UK took them unfairly. The Maldives says they have an even older claim to the islands and want to be part of the decision.
4. What is happening now?
   The Maldives has told the UK that it does not accept the deal to give the islands to Mauritius. They want to protect their own claim and might ask international courts to help decide who really owns the islands.
5. Why does it matter?
   The islands are important for military reasons and also because people called Chagossians used to live there but were forced to leave. Some people want the UK to keep control so the Chagossians can return home.
