Offbeat News Wtf is going on with Maldives and Mauritius? 😬

I don't know, they have their problems all time.

Summary for me, A2 English level user. Geography? I have skipped all lessons. There is 0 countries and islands I recognize in this text. I am certified fool, yes. :giggle::coffee::alien::alien::devilish:

  1. What are the Chagos Islands?
The Chagos Islands are a group of small islands in the Indian Ocean. They are important because they have a big military base on one island called Diego Garcia, which is used by the UK and the US.
  2. Who wants the islands?
    • The UK currently controls the islands.
    • Mauritius, a nearby country, says the islands belong to them and wants the UK to give the islands back.
    • The Maldives, another nearby country, says, "Wait! We don’t agree with this plan because we think the islands belong to us, not Mauritius."
  3. Why is there a disagreement?
A long time ago, the UK took control of the islands from Mauritius when Mauritius was still a colony. Now, Mauritius wants the islands back because they say the UK took them unfairly. The Maldives says they have an even older claim to the islands and want to be part of the decision.
  4. What is happening now?
The Maldives has told the UK that it does not accept the deal to give the islands to Mauritius. They want to protect their own claim and might ask international courts to help decide who really owns the islands.
  5. Why does it matter?
The islands are important for military reasons and also because people called Chagossians used to live there but were forced to leave. Some people want the UK to keep control so the Chagossians can return home.
In short, it’s like three friends all saying, ā€œThis toy belongs to me!ā€ and they are trying to figure out who really owns it by talking and maybe asking a judge to help. The Maldives just said, ā€œWe don’t agree with the plan to give the toy to that friend.ā€

Those islands are a goldmine for tourism and some of the biggest local stakeholders are billionaires. Of course they will challenge even a G7 country for the rights.

These over-acheiving goat herders would probably rather get nuked than give up the rights.

Thought the same, but apparrently there's military base there? šŸ¤·šŸ»

Also you could chill with the racism/nationalism/whatever I'm seeing here.
