Entities helped me rank many posts. I used to spend same amount of time on entity research and keyword research. I've also published an article on entities in another forum 4 years ago. I believe that Google algo further evolved over time and these things became even more complicated. I still use them for keyword research and rich snippets but it's not as easy to rank with entities anymore. However, they are still important for search relevance.
