Microsoft released the operating system to computer manufacturers on July 14, 1995, and just over a month later, on August 24, sales opened in stores.
Microsoft spent heavily on marketing the system, including a commercial featuring the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" as a reference to the Start menu and a 30-minute demonstration of the system featuring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry from the then-new and extremely popular TV series Friends.
In some countries, computer stores stayed open all night and customers lined up for midnight sales. In New York, Microsoft paid to light up the Empire State Building in the colors of the Windows logo.
Its launch became a cultural sensation, coinciding with the first major wave of internet usage. Several features that first appeared in Windows 95, such as the Start menu and taskbar, have become firmly entrenched in the public consciousness. Even today, it's easy to see the kinship in Windows 11.
Did you use it, what is your memory of it?
