Why on Earth does a bed need to be reliant on Amazon AWS? This is just crazy to me.

Why on Earth does a bed need to be reliant on Amazon AWS? This is just crazy to me.

But you see it more and more how many BIG companies are tied to shopify. If anything happened how quick could some of those companies redeploy.

The more we rely on the few the more vulnerable we become.

End of the day it's a bed. Why does it need internet access. Don't think anything has changed in terms of the bed apart from the materials we lie on, and that's relative to where you are in the world.

If it's not broke don't fix it.

What happens if your own wifi goes down, if your cat ate the router or any of one million things that can cause the internet to go out?
I'm not talking about zombie attacks, these are things that happen everyday.

Overall I think this is a bit naive to not consider bigger companies shutting down, or be offline for a few hours. Every worker strike can shut such a service for a day or two.

Companies shut down all the time, and it's not just companies from a 100 years ago. Toys'R'Us, Sears, Blockbuster, Kodak, AltaVista and a million other examples.

IoT is a bad thing for security, privacy and as we have seen lately with the AWS and Azure outages, reliability too. Security, for example, there was a Casino who's high rollers database got hacked and they later found out that it was an internet connected thermometer in a fishtank at the casion that got hacked, they used it to breach the data bases and syphoned data back through the thermometer up in to the cloud.

As for privacy, law enforcement and intelligence agencies around the world are outsourcing jobs to big tech companies at an alarming rate. Over here for example the GCHQ which is essentially the local counterpart to the NSA has secret deals with Amazon and uses aWS to hold it's data. All Ring doorbells here can be connected to the police's NICE platform which essentially gives them access to your devices footage they can access directly via uploads to AWS. These kinds of deals with govenrment agencies subcontracting work to big tech companies is happening everywhere around the world. Whole thing is becoming one big intelligence operation. And this comes not too long after a scandal involving AWS employees wathcing customer surveillance footage for entertainment.

IMHO if you really need everything from your bed to your vaccum connected to the internet for some reason imho maybe look at an easy solution that allows you to hold data on premises and control cloud upload, like Ubqiuiti's doorbells for example.

How is 3/.5k 'cheap as fuck' for high quality beds? Even Super kingsize Tempur mattresses don't cost that much. Anything more than that is just going to be useless crap, like mattresses sprinkled with gold dust and that kind of crap for super rich people for the sake fhe sake of them haivng something super rare and exclusive.

IMHO if you really need everything from your bed to your vaccum connected to the internet for some reason imho maybe look at an easy solution that allows you to hold data on premises and control cloud upload, like Ubqiuiti's solutions for example.

You could set up a PI-Hole & PI-Sniffer.

Get one to find all the outbound decides that are talking in your home and sending stuff out 24/7 (thats shocking in it's self!) and then get a Pi-Hole set up to stop any and all devices talking outwards to services or manufactures that have no business needing to know what goes on in your home.
