Mark Sisson is someone who has a balanced take when it comes to health and fitness.

He wrote a fantastic article on why a healthy individual should drink alcohol.

Obviously, if you have an issue with alcohol, you should skip this one, but if not, I would give it a read to have more color around the current trend of giving up alcohol.

 
I think it's a person to person thing. Some people crash and burn. Others manage to schedule it in to their weekly routine without any real problem. In some parts of the world, it's a way of life. Like in Mongolia for example -

Notice the tiny cups. The key is to swig it through out the day, not drink the whole bottle at once and then shit your pants!

I drink an occasional beer, not much more than that. Not a big fan of any heavier drinks, except for Arak (very similar to Ouzo).
