In addition to the Trading Post update, @Impulse and I have been working on rebalancing the karma system. You can find the changes to how karma works below.
New positive karma events

What we did instead was consider actions that take away from the forum.
These are the current negative karma events:
Positive Karma
We've decided to go with a pseudo-ternary system when it comes to balancing positive karma events. This means that actions either generate 0, 10, or 20 karma. Before you ask, there are 0 karma actions such as donating karma, which generates 0 additional karma.New positive karma events
- Creating a poll now generates 10 karma
- Adding tags to threads generates 10 karma per thread tagged.
- Posting a profile message now generates 10 karma
- Voting in a poll now generates 10 karma.
- Uploading an avatar now generates 30 karma. We want to encourage more members to upload avatars.
- Getting a follower generates 20 karma now instead of 10. Losing a follower costs 20 karma instead of 10.
- Following someone generates 10 karma now instead of 1. Unfollowing someone costs 10 karma instead of 1.
- Getting a thread stickied now generates 30 karma instead of 25.
- Creating a thread now generates 30 karma instead of 20.
- Someone reacting to your content now generates 10 karma instead of 2.
- Getting a trophy now generates 30 karma instead of 50.
Events that have stayed the same
- Stars still generate 30 karma.
Negative Karma
There has to be something that causes someone to lose karma. There aren't very many of these actions as we want to encourage activity, so it was difficult to come up with negative karma events. We've also been told that it's fairly difficult to gain karma as it is, so we don't want too many of these negative karma events.What we did instead was consider actions that take away from the forum.
These are the current negative karma events:
- Receiving a notice still costs 1,000 karma.
- Downloading an attachment costs 30 karma.
- Uploading an attachment costs 10 karma. This takes up space on our server and we prefer for members to embed.
