Holi basically is a festival that symbolises good over evil.
It stems from the Hindu legend of Prahlad - known as a legendary devotee of Vishnu (one third of the Hindu Trinity)
His father Hiranyakashyapu was a daitya/demon king, who wanted everyone to regard him as the God and worship him. However, Prahlad kept worshipping Vishnu, which infuriated his father.
Beyond a point, he decided to kill his own son. He's said to have tried various ways to kill him, but the child had divine protection and was saved every single time.
Hiranyakashyapu's sister Holika is said to have a boon from the gods, that made her invulnerable to fire. So they setup a pyre and Holika went and sat in the pyre with her nephew on her lap, and they were set ablaze.
The plot was obviously to kill Prahlad. But there was a caveat in the boon. It's said that it was for her own protection, and was never meant to be something that would harm someone else. So everything backfired spectacularly, Holika burned to ashes as the boon vanished, while Prahlad under divine protection walked out unscathed.
This came to be known as Holika Dahan (The immolation of Holika) - and thus the festival is divided into two parts.
On the night of Holika Dahan, small pyres are built across the country and lit. People come over to worship, and essentially "reset" their thoughts, relationships and karma. You're supposed to burn away your greed, envy and any impure thoughts.
The next morning, is all about waters and colors. You go out with friends, drink copious amounts of Thandai (Cold Milk drink with Rose Petals, Saffron, Fennel and about 10 other things). This Thandai can be spiked with Bhaang (A Cannabis Paste - legal in India since forever - our own "edible"). There's tons of food, dancing. Nowadays you have events with curated playlists, private DJs, rain dance setups and the works. Basically good vibes, all round.
No connection as two different festivals with a gap of 7 months between themIs it connected somehow to the Diwali? I remember it's the festival of lights.
