Goal: $383.88
Current Amount: $383.88
Amount Left: $0
Note that the goal amount may be lowered over time since we’re looking to move to a server that better suits this forum’s needs.

We've started this thread as we're looking to raise funds to move Office Outlaw to a new host. The current host is a VPS I already had that's quite expensive and we're not even nearly using close to all of the resources we have on it.

Any membership upgrade payments or donations made from this point on will go to the new server payment.

I started it off with $47.15.

When Does This Fundraiser End?
This fundraiser will end on July 31, 2026.

What Happens If We Don't Meet This Goal?
We'd just move Office Outlaw to a shared host, but we'll probably be moving it to a new host anyway. The amount just determine how good of a server we can get.

Worst comes to worst, the site speed may be affected, although we're still running some tests based on the current traffic and resource usage to make sure the other host can handle it.

What Else Can You Do?
If you can't donate, no problem. In fact, if you know of any hosting companies that would be better for OO, we're open to recommendations as well.

Here are the current resource stats for OO:
  • 1.1GB of our 2GB RAM limit used
  • 3.4GB of storage space used
  • 2% of our 2 vCPU cores used.
Xenforo sites usually require a minimum of 1GB of RAM, which is why that's used the most.

Get a linode

My servers cost me $700-900 a year and I think I get more traffic than here. No offence.

I just mean your paying half my costs now seems high that's all.

You got to manage it your self. But should be better

Where do we donate the donate link?

Yeah, that’s exactly why I’m looking to move the server regardless. The current VPS is one I used to host sites for clients and myself. I no longer host sites for others these days and I have fewer sites than I used to, so it’s overkill for just one forum. That, and they far cheaper than this years ago.

I can look into getting a linode server. Thanks for the suggestion.
Where do we donate the donate link?
There’s a PayPal donation button and a Stripe donation link on the Donation page here: https://officeoutlaw.com/help/donate/

Alternatively, if you want a badge in your profile, you can get a Patron membership on the upgrades page: https://officeoutlaw.com/account/upgrades

With that price you get a great server, although in Sweden with these specs 8 vCPU Processor 32 GB Memory 400 GB NVMe SSD 20 TB Bandwidth here, I got a 2 cpu and 4gb server there that costs me $43 a year, works great. This is not a cheap server either as you have Ceph Replication-3 redundancy on it, read more about that here, not you normal cheap vps.

That right there sounds excellent.

Are you paying that much for a managed or unmanaged VPS? I remember last year, I had a Flokinet server that had pretty good pricing, although it was unmanaged, so I had to set it all up myself.

It is unmanaged since I slap a FlyWP panel/system as I host WP sites. But, This is not a cheap regular server either as you have Ceph Replication-3 redundancy on it, read more about that here, not you normal cheap vps. This is real business servers, not to be confused with regular cheap vps servers.

I think what @Dopious suggested sounds perfect for the cost and lets you expand and grow with it. Certainly gives you some more flexibility and slashes your current over heads.

Linode is unmanaged and you would need to place your own control panel on it if you wanted that kind of thing or you just run it all from the terminal.

Even something line like Bluehost VPS is under $100 for the year in advance for 2 cpu, 4gb ram

We got a donation of $100. I'm not sure if the user wants to remain anonymous, but thank you very much!

I'm still looking over options for the new server, so the new goal will likely be lowered. The current VPS was priced well at the time I got it during a Black Friday deal many years ago. However, given what everyone has said in this thread, the current prices are unreasonable for what I'm getting on top of it being overkill for just the forum.

If we could renew membership in advance it would've prob helped I think.

We got another donation of $150. You know who you are, and thank you very much for both the donation and all the helpful suggestions you've given since joining the forum.

I'm still looking over the hosting options. I'll also message the current host to see if they have discounts or something available to see if they can be more competitive in their pricing. It doesn't hurt to try, you know?

Once we sort out the server situation, I can look into auto-renewals for subscriptions.

When it was initially set up, I wasn't sure how members would feel about that. I suppose I don't like auto-renewals myself and just assumed most would prefer not to have them here.
Time for me to upgrade.

Just did the discounted saphire $50.

Will keep an eye in here, if more needed will happily pay more
It looks like it didn't go through, but thank you still.

If the badge doesn't appear on your profile, go ahead and open a ticket here so that it can be looked into. https://officeoutlaw.com/support/

You will always be looking for the rainbow over the hill..

Pull the trigger on the cheaper hosting, get it booked in for 2-3 years, use the change or any additional donations to extend domain renewal for the same time frame.

Relax knowing it's covered for a couple of years.

Any badge upgrades goes in the kitty, sorted.

Anything left over put in to the site or use to ease some pressures. Leave the donations up, but the original post I think is solved! Got alternative options have some funds. Put the issue to bed.

There! Enough slangy / business terms / shit used in one post for a day.

I've got the last $11 on the way

Will fight anyone that gets there before me, wanted to send across $20 if that's still alright

I can cover the last $11. The original goal was for keeping it on the same server for a year, but that server is overpriced and I'd rather move it elsewhere where I can get 2 or even 3 years of hosting with more appropriate specs for this forum. I might even be able to get more storage space so that I can finally bump up that attachment limit.

But I appreciate the thought of it, so thank you for that. :)

We met our goal and are planning on moving the site to a new server in August or September at the latest.

Before and after the forum gets moved, I’ll post an announcement thread about it to make sure nobody is experiencing any issues.

Thank you again to everyone who donated.
