Android Talk me into a mobile upgrade.

All for jokes.
Really?

If you have a lot of money, you can afford testing different devices. And own them.

It can be couple used phones, maybe produced 2 years ago.

I understand it's all too "fantastic"...

Personally, I use a 16 Pro Max and a Pixel 9. Im not upgrading to the 17 Pro Max because it just doesnt make sense when my current phone still works perfectly fine. But Ill probably replace the 16 Pro Max next year since Ive started noticing the battery degrading a bit.
Boss choice.

Retina displays are good.

Having double os is even better.

I've been getting a new Samsung Galaxy every 2 years ever since the inception... until now.

Got S23 Ultra, probably the last actually good Samsung with true optical 10x zoom. 24, 25, 26 are not worth the price tag and are inferior to competitors.

And whatever new comes from now on will be definitely inferior hardware wise or extremely expensive due to hardware shortages. So definitely not worth the bother.

In one word, enshitification.

Whether we like it or not, its a real fcking thing. If we are in real business, we cant hang around with a $100–$200 phone.

Yeah that kind of thing never really bothers me though to be honest. I get people make comments all the time, but then they always ask me to buy the drinks because they got a £50+ mobile phone monthly payment.

As I've gotten older I don't really chase it to be perfectly honest.

Samsungs are safe bets but I also have an issue with screens cracking eventually. I haven’t had a Samsung in a few years though, so maybe that’s no longer an issue.

DO NOT get a flip phone. The screens always broke for me after a month and replacement screens are either ridiculously expensive or unavailable.

My daughter keeps buying the flip and every screen has broken she never learns. She likes the fact it folds despite the fact she's on it constantly with the screen open.

I don't get it.
If you like Huawei, then you might be able to import an unlocked one yourself and setting it up with your mobile carrier. Check Reddit to see if anyone in the UK has done that as there’s always someone on Reddit who tries something like that.

I did think about asking my china rep to do exactly this to be honest.

🤣 I would say it's a mindset in our country this one bro. For phone doesn't shows anything I go with a mid tier Samsung and it works fine for me even though everyone tells me this exact thing, u are a tech bro ,u are a businessman u can't stay with that phone buy iPhone bla bla bla.

Can relate.

I live in Spain and honestly i kinda feel the same here. Seems like @t2van has the same "problem" in UK.

And tbh, I havent really seen anyone involved in serious business, Im talking businesses like construction, real estate development, big IT firms, etc. walking around with a €200 phone. They either use a Samsung S model, or an Iphone. Lately Pixel too. Thats from my experience.

Yeah that's because it's easier to buy a new phone than give the money to the tax man. For me I can just buy a new tractor or barn makes more of a dent in my tax vs a phone. We don't tend to offer staff phones either I should but then all my IT tech is dated until later this year!

I'm very much if it works it works.

Im not arguing iPhone vs Samsung. It can be either, but at least a decent phone thats not more than 3 years old.

But i definitely wouldnt keep using an iPhone 12. No offense, but its really slow now and honestly kinda gives off “brokie” vibes lol

I know it does the job. You can still make calls, use whatsap and open email but hell nah...

I wouldn't keep an iPhone that long I dont think it would function without the space. These Huawei though do seem made to last like @GoldenGlovez said, has his (assuming gender) longer and still doest miss a beat. Some of this tech is just solid. The AI on my phone for something thats pushing 10 years knows who I take the photos of the most and focuses on them when other people around its little shit ahead of its time really.

I'm still rocking a Huawei Mate 9 I bought in Taiwan in early 2017. Fantastic phone, still does everything I need from it. It's definitely a bit long in the tooth and I don't like the lack of continued Android security updates but I don't really do any banking on it.
Thats exactly the same as me really. I think they are rock solid for what they are.

But urgh I think it's time to move. To be honest I just want wireless charging lol
I'm thinking about a change to a new phone soon as well though partly because the charging port is starting to get a bit finicky. I was considering waiting until my next trip over there to get a new one, but I'm a bit unsure about the HarmonyOS change.

Have you tried a needle (sowing) in the charging port? I thought mine was knocked and I cleaned out all the crap and its like a new phone again lol

I'm old school, I'll use tech until it disintegrates and I can't fix it with some solder. Planned obsolescence can kiss my ass.

Yes.

100%

Bring back mechanical buttons.

I want to none shit is off. None of this build a washing machine with a 2mm bit of plastic to hold a button thats designed to break after 10k presses. It's this kind of thinking I seem to like my 10 Pro, part of me wants to see how far can it "go" but things move on quick and quicker these days..

Yeah, I think just about everybody I've spoken to who bought one of those phones had the exact same issue. The screens always break in the same ways, too.

The only one that was good was the Moto Razr 2020. My screen for that one broke, but it was actually after dropping it a load of times on the corner. It caused the screen to start peeling, but the phone actually does still work, unlike the Samsung flip phone and the newer Moto Razr I got that broke immediately.

let me ask you the question then
what are you using your phone for really?
calls txt porn?
just pick a phone you like and go for it
if your looking for something that will last you more than 1 year, anyone is a option really but samsung.
Xiaomi and honor ain't really bad, but the quality of the materials may be questionable on the lower end models

Phone.
Contact apps (element to shits app)

I don't need the monster phones.

No games.

Photos when out with family etc.

Access emails.

Yes I know. I'm just undecided

I’m all for the Pixel phone as well. With GrapheneOS, it’s fairly secure, but even without it, you still get a really nice phone that can keep up with Samsung and the iPhone.

OK... Thanks to everyone.

Decided to not go for a Pixel. Took the night over it, the biggest selling point is the AI function? Until we reach an AI like this:

I'm not sure I need one in my pocket.

Plus I'm constantly on the go the battery doesn't seem to last as long as say the Honor 600 Pro and it has a quicker charging time. Comparing them side by side hardware and tech seems to be the better phone.

My asian contact wants to send me the tri-folding Huawei phone? I'm not a fan of the fold although the technology that company is bringing out looks amazing figure it's a scare to western companies rather than "spying" lol

This is such a good thread... You guys say Huawei's are good? Never tried that, hmm.

I'm boring person with a Nokia that I change every couple years. Wouldn't really keep a phone as my main phone for 10 years though, specs are too low after that long for someone that uses phone a lot, like me. Like, when I constantly run out of space, even after moving my photos to external hd or it gets slow then I buy a new one. Old one sometimes can be used for some bh/gh or as ebook reader or something.

Quickly checked, my current one premiered in June 2023. Seems to work fine now, but if I end up doing a lot of content and editing on it and it will run out of space too much and this will actually earn me money then I can update. But so far it works fine, maybe I'll be able to squeeze out a year or two more out of it.

You know what. My Mate 10 Pro.

I've never ran out of space, it's never slowed down or bogged down. It's been perfect that entire time for my needs. I guess If I was running latest games on it or something id probably notice some lock up but I don't mobile game.

It's honestly a solid phone and brand in my opinion and like I said had it 10 years never missed a beat. Ok it doesn't have 5G but everything else is perfect for me.

It's only been the last 6 months I can't really hear calls through the ear speaker no more so it's on loud speaker all the time which isn't ideal when I'm talking about certain things in the office battery still lasts me 24 hours.

I don't think I've had an OS update for 2-3 years though but that doesn't really bother me, never did. I just want wireless charging and be able to listen to my calls. That's the only driver for an upgrade. If I didn't have to use loud speaker, id still use it!

It's very much an under rated brand I think and when you look at what they do with tablets and laptops it's very good. The fact the gov told me not to own one or keep it, meant it had to be good ;) lol

I've gone for the Honor 600 Pro. It's an offshoot of the Huawei brand so I'm hoping to get another 10+ years out of this phone. The spec is slightly better (for me needs) when I compared to the Pixel. But that's just me.

I do find myself on my phone browsing here now and again but I still prefer a laptop for that, I'm not down with the kids with using my phone for everything the camera looks decent as well and that works for me for my needs.

It's coming tomorrow between 8 and 8. Cost me £650-700 I think. Has some free speaker offer or something I can claim so that's a little gimmick, something for nothing (although I've probably paid for it) so I'll share photos then :)

Nice, feel free to share 😁. I realized my phone supports up to 1TB memory card, but it has hybrid dual sim sooo when 2 sim cards are in there's nowhere to put memory card in. A bit of an issue since I do use that feature a lot. But yeah, not impossible to extend storage on this phone, it seems.

I would rather say it has an awesome camera, but yeah, it might not do your lovely family justice as in reality.

Got it. It's new. Feel fucking old.what a nightmare to set it up screen nice

front just captures me taking photo so no point in that, its nice, got warm with updated, going to take a while to get used to it. Goes right to the edge the display does, certainly different tech compared to other phone.

Seems OK. Was a nightmare to set up. Felt old doing it all and also regretted having to do it and wish my old phone was still good enough to use.

Ah well.

You disapointed me with this choice :D

Jokes aside, hope you enjoy it and that it treats you well!
