I may have missed this when the entire thing happened and the hoax but I just seen the thread on X now and thought id share.

Taken from the first post:

This is the greatest social experiment ever conducted:

He created a fake restaurant on TripAdvisor.

No food. No staff. No venue.Yet it became the #1 ranked restaurant in London...

Here's how he pulled it off:

Omg, I refuse to believe this:

"Surprisingly, they loved it.

Some claimed they tasted subtle flavors in the microwave meals.

No one suspected they were eating budget frozen food in a garden shed.

Perception became reality.

The aftermath? Equally fascinating"

I am not a super fancy connaiseur but since generally I love to cook my meals (when I have time) I do have common sense what tastes good or not. I've went to super fancy restaurants and the food just dodn't cut it, I fast saw through it: a fancy place, with great marketing, complete hoax, overpriced shit.

Yeah! There are a LOT of overpirced shit out there.

I'm a bit of a food snob. I wont go back to anyplace that can't cook better than me.

If I have to pay I want to enjoy it and it should be better than I can do at home if not I don't see the point in going out. Don't get me wrong, sometimes there's nothing better than home-cooked pub meals I appreciate that and do enjoy them because it's exactly what it claims to be.

I got an issue with anything that uses cheaper cuts of meat/fish than I do at home "the best burger ever" and it's using processed shit.

As for the bit you can't believe. I dunno.. it's hype, people will wait and build something up combined with an exclusive factor behind it, the power of suggestion

Totally relate to this. Wtf, I am doing this as a hobby, and you as professional you can't make this food better than me? No, and I do tell people about it. I do have standards and I do respect my money!

I might open a restaurant selling my gourmet patties then.

:D

I have heard such tales of ghost restaurant but not one which achieved #1 status.

I enjoyed this read very much.

Got damn! means ORM is very important and fake it till you make it is a thing

I came across this on X, but Im not sure how relevant it is today. The experiment dates back to 2017 and a lot has changed since then in 2025
