This is very old news. And tackles a very real problem.
Wolbachia strain has been quite famous in achieving some very impressive results in controlling dengue.
Even the US and UK has programs and private companies working on this.
Look up Oxitec (British Firm) and their RDIL program.
They basically "manufacture" genetically modified mosquitos that breed with the female, and due to the genetic modification, the eggs hatched either don't hatch or the resultant offsprings die shortly.
Only female mosquitoes bite, males don't have the necessary mouth part to do that. And females will breed once in a lifetime. Also, mosquitoes have a lifetime of 7-8 days.
So these companies will release hundreds of millions, often billions of sterile of genetically modified mosquitoes, who will then breed with the females in the area.
Within 10 days all released mosquitoes and the females they bred with will die.
The eggs layed will either not hatch or the pupae will just die after hatching.
Result - The whole population of the area now reduces within 2 weeks.
