Resolved Can my private messages be read?

Hi just wondering something real quick.

I know on some forums that mods can read private messages.

I was wondering if you guys can see the messages here too?

I think I know why you're asking this.

The short answer is that we can only see messages if they get reported or if someone in the conversation shares a screenshot of it.

If you're from the forum that shall not be named, then I'll say that I mentioned in a feedback thread there that there was a "login as user" feature. This was an add-on and not built into Xenforo, but it's what allowed specific mods and admins to be able to read messages even if they weren't reported.

I'm not really sure if we'll ever use a similar add-on here. If I did ever consider installing it, I'd probably put a poll up to make sure at least the community here is comfortable with it first. But it's also a $15 unmaintained plugin, so it's not exactly high up on the priority list of things to look into.

I completely understand! I know whenever I told members about that feature elsewhere, they were put off and I get why. Nobody really knew who had access to that tool, and it's unnerving because you don't know if someone is going to be stupid and read messages just for fun.

I feel like the cons outweigh the pros, but like I said, if I ever do consider it, I would discuss it with the community first.

Rules will need to be tightened up as we go along. I want to keep things fairly looser here overall, but I will add in stricter rules about selling, specifically not to start soliciting to others around the forum or via DM. There’s a marketplace called the trading post that people can sell in, but it’s not ready to go yet because I’m making this a community first.

Anyway, I’ll work on this today as I anticipate that this will be one of the first issues we have on Office Outlaw.
