In a move that has sent shockwaves through the world of proprietary software, the Danish Ministry of Digitalisation and Gender Equality has dramatically dumped Microsoft Office 365. Sources say the Ministry was tired of Microsoft's expensive habits and controlling nature, and has instead shacked up with the free-spirited, open-source dreamboat, LibreOffice.

The Danes, apparently inspired by their German neighbors in Schleswig-Holstein, are dipping their toes in the open-source water, with half the ministry making the switch this summer. If all goes well and nobody accidentally formats the national budget as a grocery list, the entire ministry will be rocking LibreOffice by year's end.

The Minister of Digitalisation, Caroline Stage Olsen, basically said they were sick of being tied to a few foreign tech giants, which was cramping their style and their budget. By embracing LibreOffice, they're not just saving a boatload of kroner, they're taking a stand for "digital sovereignty" – which is fancy talk for "we want to be the boss of our own computers." The LibreOffice community, meanwhile, is doing a happy dance, thrilled that their "public funds for public code" mantra is catching on. They're hailing it as a victory for freedom, openness, and the little guy everywhere. Microsoft was last seen quietly weeping into a pile of money.

Other than Libre's excel alternative's ability to apply 8 filters at the same time, I just couldn't get used to it over Office.
