This is after they had that data breach lmao.

In a bid to help protect teens and children online, some apps have begun rolling out mandatory ID checks or face scans to access adult content. While an unverified user can still use the app, all the mature content is blocked until they upload something that proves they're over 18.

I fucking hate Discord. I'm never going to use it. I get that a lot of people like it or whatever but I just can't stand it.

The worst thing about it is how often I try to download software or find a support channel and it's locked behind a stupid fucking discord group. I just have to accept that I'm not going to get it then because there is no fucking way I will download Discord just for that shit. It's absolute garbage.

Sorry, rant over.

Always disliked the consolidation of online discussion under a singular platform, and Discord is a major black hole for historical information as none of it is easily indexable or archivable. Forums for long form discussions, IRC for live discussion when just bullshitting around or organizing work, and dedicated VOIP software e.g Ventrillo/Teamspeak for voice communication all worked and continue to work better than Discord does in each individual category.. (to give credit their video/screen sharing side is quite good and alternatives can be tricky/expensive to setup).

It's going to be tough migrating away from Discord nowadays when so many gaming and even software services support are solely on Discord, its often the sole source of information on updates. We've got a gaming centric server with friends of around ~400 users and are currently discussing alternatives for a move.

Discord always kind of reminds me a little bit of IRC, but it's like the dumb Temu version.

They identified a pretty common pain point with IRC, and that was retention of private messages and chat history when you went offline. Remember we needed to use BNC's to connect to IRC servers to be able to get messages and previous chat while offline? They packaged that up all nicely in with a high ease of use, bundled in voice chat as well and it was a perfect recipe. Tech literacy was already on the decline at those times and a younger generation looking for a quick way to type and voice chat weren't going to be sitting around spending a few hours learning how to set all that up. In exchange for that ease of use we gave all our data and privacy to a centralized company.. who can do anything with it now. To this day though and over a decade of development, neither server permission granularity or voice chat flexibility on Discord match the old ways.
