I always hear that you’re not supposed to do this but the people saying that usually own companies.

People at the worker level though always at you should discuss wages. But I only see doing this as causing problems for yourself when your manager finds out.

What is the right thing to do here?

Don`t know what the right thing to do is, but here is a fun new law that takes effect in June this year in Sweden. And that with a republican government in the seat now, not by the democrats//Left-side.

The new rules are based on the EU Pay Transparency Directive, which will be fully implemented in Sweden by June 2026. Here is a brief summary:
  • Right to Information: Employees can request the average pay levels, broken down by gender, for colleagues doing the same or "equal value" work.
  • Recruitment Transparency: Employers must provide a salary range or starting pay before your first interview. They are also forbidden from asking about your current or past salary.
  • No Pay Secrecy: Companies can no longer ban employees from discussing their salaries with each other.
  • Reporting Requirements: Companies with 100+ employees must report their gender pay gap. If a gap exceeds 5% and cannot be justified, they must take corrective action.
  • Public vs. Private: While public sector salaries are already public record in Sweden, these new rules significantly increase transparency in the private sector.

I think that’s a good new law they added in there!

Personally I think it's taboo in the UK.

I got no problem sharing what I earn or my networth / portfolio to a degree.

Whenever I been in the USA people often ask about income and assets etc.. Unless I hung around with wrong people lol

Got no problem with my staff talking what people earn if they want. Draw the line at the admin/accountant telling people what other people earn or if they had pay rise mind. That's a while other thing.
