Linux Fun Fact: Ubuntu's system requirements are higher than Windows 11

I'm a simple man. A minimal arch install, X11, i3wm, pipewire, mostly CLI tools (neovim ftw), and a browser. No fancy DE or compositor. Lean and mean machine, less than 1GB of RAM and ~200mb of vRAM used at boot, fully functional for all my needs.

I like Ubuntu and wouldn't mind upgrading my specs just to escape Microsoft.
Yeah, I'm trying too.

Have turned away from Google and Microsoft when I got my hands on iPhone 8 recently and researched MacBooks with RoyDan...

Oh... these devices are created like art.
Microsoft is bad at art and beauty, fo real.
I have Asus Rog Strix 16 laptop... I bought it with Windows Pro. Now they removed my license and downgraded my Windows to Home. Wtf?!

Dis ugly af but will run on a fuckin toaster, so if you need to temporarily use your barely functional computer and nothing runs this will work before you get a better one: Puppy Linux, Slitaz.
Puppy, puppy, puppy.
Daddy, daddy, daddy. :giggle:

I'll build my puppy tamagotchi.
Thank you.

@Dopious idk what the thread was about at this point... But like... Seriously. That lame ass above is distracting.

If you need for your old machine I'd *still* strongly suggest upgrading to 8GB at least if possible, that's like an absolute minimum for a desktop, not sure if lower will be that usable. Like, at these Dell/Lenovo/HP refurb shops sort by cheapest and there will be 8GB machines.

Grab https://ventoy.net and pick multiple distros you want to try and download live isos and put them on Ventoy. This way you can distro hop hop like @Yes easter bunny and check which distro works best without installing even. When you find one you like you can install to hard drive, there's install icon on the desktop or in menu.

Distros to try, pick what you like: https://distrowatch.com

For desktop you can try something like Fedora, Manjaro, Endavour or main distros like Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, Red Hat has free developer version (I linked somewhere here in Tools at the Forge). Basically just put a bunch of isos on usb stick and test them all to see what you like, problem solved. Doesn't have to be Ubuntu if it doesn't run on your machine. Doesn't have to be what I like either, pick what looks interesting to you from DistroWatch.

😂😂😂

What is this Linux for noobs week 1?

He already said he posted the thread for fun. Pretty sure the guy knows what he's doing and has an actual IM business.

She's talking to me.

Cool! I personally don't like Ubuntu that much but used to like BackBox which is/was based on Ubuntu, this was somehow better configured than Kali which somehow is misconfigured Debian eh, some weird glitches on Kali here and there that BackBox didn't have. I see it's dead, last updated in 2024 🙁.

Woo, we needed that 'I use Arch, btw' vibe in this thread! Neovim. Nice. Love this. I'm boring, I'd either Debian or RH/Fedora eh. Honestly Red Hat's corpo vibe somehow appeals to me (like, you know, feelin' professional on Dell + Red Hat or Fedora lol) but I'm afraid @Zwielicht will smack me in the head for saying I like something corporate 😂. Xfce preference here but tbh if I'm lazy I'm gonna go with default desktop, what can I say.

Exactly why I suggested trying out main distros too, if he has really low spec machine it might be more realistic to configure stuff yourself and go very custom rather than go with a typical desktop distro.

Nothing bad with Macs, MacOS is *technically* proprietary *BSD lol, just like Android is proprietary Linux... A bit too much control in Apple's hands, I'd rather control my own machine more but I can get the appeal, it's not necessarily bad system at all.

Eheheh, that distro is... Peculiar. I swear it fuckin barks when you boot into it! 😆 Idk some dude liked his dog or what. It's like if ferret guy would make a distro but dog dude instead.

Yeah, kinda. If someone tries Linux for the first time I'd say it'd be beneficial to distro hop rather than only try Ubuntu and swear off Linux completely if he dislikes Ubuntu. Now it's easier because Ventoy and live systems are available, no need to install a different distro every couple days like when I started. If he likes something he can use for couple years and after couple years distro hop again to find a better one again, etc.

No idea, maybe he's poor and has weak computer and needs help. Or someone else here does and could use that advice. Why you're so active in this thread anyway, I thought you're MacOS user, stop pretending to be Linux user if you don't actually use it.

Just fyi this news is about Gaming ain't nobody else fretting about this or taking it off topic 😑

I use both

I just like to learn from this conversational style. It feels more human than some books or schools... when I form the right connection with someone, learning from their posts feels like pleasure, not a chore. But for this you need attitude towards other people and see them as friends, not something else.

Better move to the saloon, so the forum doesn't lose reputation for being known as derailing. Big brother is watching... AI is actively scanning websites. Will OO rank under "most offtopic forum ever"?

Gaming? People try to game on less than 6GB RAM??

First thing I thought was that Dopious is jealous of Linux users and wants to brag how Windows is supposedly superior. Which is silly since Linux does NOT = Ubuntu, there's tons of distros and this is Ubuntu, not general Linux issue. I'd say it's a non-issue actually because minimum requirements are below cheapest desktop machines on the market, it'd be very unusual use case to use computer with weaker parameters than these minimums. Either someone is dead ass broke or his/her main computer broke and there's only this ancient thing in the attic till you get a new machine lol. Or someone is doing a DIY firewall but that's usually not Linux even but most commonly pfSense (BSD). Just doesn't make fuckin sense, what kind of news is that... Nobody's gonna install a desktop distro on something that has less than 6GB of ram.

Alright. Do you, though? Or mostly MacOS and Linux only sporadically, like I use mostly Linux and OpenBSD only very rarely when I'm in a mood for a weekend project? Hmmm? Which one is your *actual* daily driver?

@Dopious you jealous, brah? 🤨

I've worked with Debian long enough to know I would not recommend it for beginners migrating from Win11 and why Ubuntu is recommended. And that's true even for servers, let alone Desktops.

Whilst you yourself bought up a topic on user friendliness, there's a reason why people use ubunutu, proxmox, true nas and ubiquiti and not upstreams but good luck 'convincing' Win11 users to switch to Slackware or Puppy Linux on some chinese crap sbc or whatever else you said in an Ubuntu v Win debate because you think you know better.

Nah, I probaly done enough Linux in my 30+ years on Internet, I was among the first companies that helped users connect to cable Internet before fiber here in my city back in 1995. I`ve done it all thru the years.

That's cool 🙂
Yeah, that's how I feel when we have these conversations 😂

I mean he is, of many people and many things... Don't forget his thread where he complained about his friend getting a mortage 😂. He's very jealous and doesn't seem to be content with his life.

Bruh I don't care... I moved from Windows to Debian, worked for me. It's not my concern that someone is dumber. The whole point of Linux is having this fun OS to experiment with, who cares about dumb people that don't know how to use a computer.

It was a fictive question around the subject, I did not have a "real" friend getting a mortgage.
