The head of the Android ecosystem, Sameer Samat, has confirmed in passing that Chrome OS and Android will be combined into a single platform. When or how is not clear. Last summer, Chrome OS began to become more Android-based to speed up the pace of development.

In late autumn, a rumor claimed that Google would even replace Chrome OS with Android. Now, for the first time, the merger has been officially confirmed. Google executives said as early as the early 2010s that they envisioned Chrome OS and Android being combined in the long term.

Android has become more desktop-friendly in recent years, better suited to laptops and large screens than before. An upcoming version of Android 16 will also offer a built-in desktop interface.

i'm all for it
I’ve never been a fan of Chrome OS either.

Interesting development. I quite like Chrome OS never had any issues with it myself always liked never crashed plus had decent power for cheap laptop for example I bought one for like £100 and still works pretty good after 10 year.

Google clarifies: Chrome OS will remain.

Google's head of the Android ecosystem said the other day that they "will combine Chrome OS and Android into a single platform," which made headlines. The statement mostly seems to have been just something Samat accidentally blurted out without realizing how it would be interpreted.

In a clarification on social media, Sameer Samat writes that they are "building the Chrome OS experience on top of underlying Android technology" to speed up the system and the pace of development, as well as to make mobiles and laptops work better together.

That was announced last summer , and in other words, nothing seems to have changed since then. If we understand the matter correctly, Chrome OS will remain and not be replaced by Android – but the platform will be more Android-based.
