Smart glasses, billed as the future of wearable technology, are having a resurgence. But there are concerns these products are being used to harm, humiliate, and infringe on the privacy of women.

Oonagh says she was filmed by a man using smart glasses, which have inbuilt cameras, without her knowledge or consent. The video was then posted on social media, getting about a million views and hundreds of comments - many of them sexually explicit and derogatory.

"I had no idea it was happening to me, I didn't consent to that being posted, I didn't consent to being secretly filmed," Oonagh said.

"It really freaked me out - it made me feel afraid to go out in public."
After sunbathing on the beach in Brighton last June, Oonagh says she was approached by a man wearing sunglasses.

He asked her name, where she was from and whether he could have her number.

She politely declined, saying that she had a boyfriend.

A few weeks later, she was sent a video on TikTok. It was a recording of the interaction she had had with the man, filmed from his perspective. She realised he had been filming her with his glasses.

Smart glasses enable the wearer to access information and apps similar to those on a smart phone including using maps, listening to music, and recording video.

How do you feel about the use of smart glasses and other covert body-worn cameras?

I am kind of on the fence about this, on the one hand I can see like above how it might have the potential to be misused by massive pervs out there. But on the other hand, if they are used for legit purposes it can be a great tool to help personal victims of crime receive justice - if the owners or third-party within shot happen to be victims of street crime the evidence can be reported to the police (and/or posted online Reddit). I feel if more people are made aware of this, it may encourage more orderly public behaviour in general.

It being common for years you can faily easy for like £20 to £50 buy cheap phone or cheap camera then do it having glasses which do it not much different.

If you want to take extreme you can get cameras which is so small most can't see them.

You being able to buy tiny cameras like 2.5 inches they being for here like 12 years or more.

I stayed for a few months in a town notorious for street crime and was half tempted by the idea of getting a proper covert body-worn camera but I was too put off by the idea of looking like a total weirdo in case it got discovered. I hope it does become more normalised though, the kind of bullshit some people probably have to put up with sometimes - scumbags hanging out on streets corners, verbal abuse, phone snatchers on so is ridiculous. They'd be like a dashcam but for you instead of just your car.

I went through all the roughest parts Glasgow often I never went really felt the need for camera for security as long as you nice or show people respect they let you do most things.

If you feel you are likely to get jumped or life is in danger then get one.

I am planning one to make recording of ferrets or exercise more easy if what I've seen right so far cost you like £50 for one or if you prefer you can contact someone from Alibaba get them to custom make you something.

I am maybe wrong if you are simply a bit shy if so do karate or Kung foo both will built your confidence plus a lot of fun.

not the issue with the smart glasses
it's the issue of the person who uploaded it or use it to commit a crime.
yes, online harassment & cyber bullying is a crime.
and illegally posting someones pics/vid u took of them secretly is also a crime at least in australia
Criminal Code s 474.17, Cth

I agree with that.

Its the same logic as guns. People kill people not guns.

People post shit. Not smart tech.

We get filmed every day now, there's probably more doors without a ring camera or similar than there are without. Least where I go walking.

I like my privacy but the filming thing you sort of have to expect.

Its interesting there was an article on hacker news (ill try find it) where someone took a DSLR out to photo his wife in startbucks or something and got told to put the camera away because they don't allow photography for privacy reasons. YET people can use a phone and do selfies and that and it's OK. It's because using a phone has become the norm and using a camera I guess is seen as a bit of an invasion of privacy.

Found it: https://photoni.st/index.php/2026/01/02/serious-suspicious/

Hold up an iPhone to capture a sunset, a street scene, or even strangers at a café, and you’re invisible. Nobody flinches. Nobody asks questions. You’re just another person documenting their life in the socially acceptable way we’ve apparently all agreed upon. But pull out a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a good lens, and suddenly you’re transformed from casual observer into potential threat.

the guy who filmed that lady must have felt like this:
