Smartphone prices have risen significantly over the past 6–7 years, long before the memory crisis. Now, of course, the Galaxy Fold 8 Ultra is a special phone and an extreme example, but the phone costs between $2-3K
Perhaps partly because of the high prices, manufacturers may be more willing to offer long-term smartphone rentals to consumers. Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to lease iPhones, iPads, computers and smartwatches for 24 or 36 months, in partnership with Klarna. After the period, the hardware can be returned, kept or upgraded to a new model.
If the report is accurate, Apple's long-term lease could be announced next week. Similar subscriptions already exist from both manufacturers and carriers: customers get to use a smartphone and upgrade after a certain number of months, in exchange for a monthly fee.
