Security updates will now continue until October 2027.

Microsoft has extended the Windows 10 ESU program, which provides users of the discontinued operating system with continued security updates, by one year, ending in October 2027 instead of 2026.

The extension was not announced in any press releases but via small changes to the ESU program page on Microsoft's website and a small update in a blog post explaining:

– This extension gives customers additional time to migrate to a new Windows 11 PC while continuing to receive critical security updates.

In the latest figures from Statcounter, Windows 10 has fallen below 30 percent of the Windows market share, but that's still hundreds of millions of computers. Since Microsoft already promises three years of security updates to paying enterprise customers, it wouldn't be surprising if the company makes the same updates available to consumers, thus extending the program for another year.

I've got mixed feelings about this; I was ready to upgrade to a new gaming laptop due to the updates ending and was looking forward to it.

Now that they've extended it for another year, ideally it'll mean the memory prices will drop before I upgrade next year.
