Euro banknotes are to get a completely new look. Now the public can help decide whether Europe's future banknotes will be adorned with cultural icons or birds and rivers.

Euro banknotes are facing their biggest change since the banknote redesign in 2002. Now, the European Central Bank has presented ten final design proposals and is inviting the public to vote for their favorite.

The ten proposals are based on two themes previously selected: “European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds”.

The European Culture theme highlights some of Europe's greatest names, such as Ludwig van Beethoven and Marie Curie. The backs of the banknotes depict different environments, such as libraries, schools and public squares.

Rivers and Birds focuses instead on Europe's nature, combining different bird species with European landscapes and institutions.

Vote for your favorite​

Now all Europeans can give their opinions. Until September 21st, you can vote on the design that should become the next banknote. But it is the ECB's Governing Council that makes the final decision, which is expected to come towards the end of the year.

Even once the final design has been chosen, it will be some time before the new banknotes reach wallets. The banknotes are not expected to begin circulating until several years after the design decision has been made.

Some of those designs are chaotic, all over the place.

I voted for those properly organized.

You see those people were "too creative" in their approach.

Organization is what makes money and what money represents.

You don't get money for being chaotic and for randomness.

The most rich people are really well organized and their time is used in optimal way.

We don't want to convey chaos but order through our money and our creation.
