Didn't think this would be an issue here until that @netmoney thread. And @netmoney bro you seem like a cool guy think I speak for everyone when I say stick around but just change your username.

OK but look how can other people be prevented from using someone else's username? I know it's hard to know everybody in the industry but maybe there can be some rules or something against it?

There's already a rule against it since this scenario was accounted for after someone tried registering @Dopious' old username here.

1.2 Member Abuse
Members may not engage in abusive behavior including excessive trolling, impersonation (e.g., registering with known usernames or close variations), libelous accusations, harassment, stalking or doxxing (posting real-world identity information).
As for what's done when this happens, it depends on how far they get with the username.
  • If the account is still in the awaiting approval and we notice it's an impersonator, we just reject it.
  • If we don't catch it there and they don't seem malicious, we force a username change.
  • If they've done anything malicious, the account is banned and the username is overwritten.
In this case, I'll have another moderator contact him later today and force the username change.

Some sorry ass thought he would get away trying to register RoiBox early on here, lame, surely it was proxygones wet dream, but he got caught the little rat.

It is already against OO's 1.2 Member Abuse
Members may not engage in abusive behavior including excessive trolling, impersonation (e.g., registering with known usernames or close variations), libelous accusations, harassment, stalking or doxxing (posting real-world identity information).
At the same time, it would be near impossible to tell from the get go whether someone is impersonating someone else as well when it is not obvious.

We will have to treat these case to case, but if you are being impersonated, please report the person and let us know along with evidence.
If you feel that someone is impersonating another, please also let us know along with evidence.

That being said, OO strictly does not allow impersonation on any form or levels.
If you feel that you need to "hide" your identity so it does not "mix" with your other personas on other forums. Please consider using a different Username and display picture to what you would normally use.
There are also ways you can specifically counteract this by having Alias Emails.. @Rem wrote up a great thread for that here https://officeoutlaw.com/threads/email-privacy-101-why-you-should-always-use-an-alias.219/

Seems a good idea if someone going to fake to be someone to sell something using the other person's popularity

Let's just put it on the table that it's very hard to catch, not to mention to verify these things. At some point we'll have an imposter problem, it's gonna happen.

People need to be responsible with who they follow or do business with. All the rules in the world and all the moderation can't replace common sense.

I think the same as you .

It was to be fair on @t0mmy good catch on his part. I don't get feeling whoever met to be this other guy is a jerk but faking one profile can get messy if something goes wrong.

My spidey senses were tingling… knew something wasn’t right after my first comment and watching how they reacted, glad this is already a rule!

What is considered famous, well known?

I honestly do not know who netmoney, so for me it is just any other username.
I only have 30 followers on facebook
not famous yet sadly

There's no stipulation in the rules that requires someone to be famous or well-known.

The rule is meant to be applicable strictly to the internet marketing industry and any IM sites where someone is known by a user handle. It's not a perfect rule as it doesn't account for if two people on different IM sites use the same username, but we'll deal with that if it ever comes up.

I get it, not hard to grasp really.

Can't believe I haven't got 14 impersonators
