Security updates will cease for WordPress versions 4.1 through 4.6

The WordPress Security Team will be discontinuing updates to the WP 4.1-4.6 branches in July. As a reminder: only the most recent version of WordPress is actively supported. Currently, this is 6.8. Please update your old sites as soon as possible!

That's good to know. I have some sites I manually update very infrequently (you know, I don't want to deal with zero day exploits that come with automatic updates), so I'll probably go through and update those later.

They say it is only just above 1 percent that are that old and had not updated yet though, but that is actually quite a few sites when you consider how many WP sites there are out there.

Yeah, that is actually quite a few. It makes sense as well if there are people who have sites that are just set up on cheap hosting that they don't check very often.

As of June 2025, over 520 million websites use WordPress, so if 1% uses 4.x that is a whopping 5,250,000 websites apparently .. A shitload of sites.
