The company's first mass-produced SSD with PCI Express 6.0.
Samsung has begun mass producing the PM1763, the company's first SSD with PCI Express 6.0, Techspot reports . It features read speeds of up to 28.4 GB/s and write speeds of up to 21.9 GB/s, with up to 950,000 IOPS for small random operations.
The company is a few months behind Micron, which began manufacturing its 9650 model in February, with read speeds of up to 28.0 GB/s. Samsung uses a new controller chip manufactured with a 4-nanometer process and 9th generation V-NAND.
As the name suggests, this is not a consumer product in M.2 format but an SSD for servers, but given how much higher the profits are in that market, it was obvious that the company would invest in it first. Consumer models will appear eventually, and this server model gives an indication of the performance levels to expect, but it will take time.
In the consumer market, PCI Express 6.0 is not expected to appear until around 2029-2030. For example, AMD has said that AM5 will continue to receive new processors until at least 2029. By the time consumers get their hands on SSDs with these speeds, the server market will already have access to PCI Express 8.0.
