Software update shoves ads onto Samsung’s pricey fridges

Days after someone revealed the news on social media, Samsung confirmed today that it is showing advertisements on some US customers’ smart fridges. Samsung said the ads showing on some Family Hub-series fridges are part of a pilot program, but we suspect that they may become more permanent additions to Samsung fridges and/or other types of screen-equipped smart home appliances.

In a statement sent to Ars Technica, Samsung confirmed that it is “conducting a pilot program to offer promotions and curated advertisements on certain Samsung Family Hub refrigerator models in the US market.”

This kind of thing would fuck me off no end.

If I was insane enough to buy a smart fridge let alone spend $3000 on one like fuck do I want adverts pushed on it.

This is the messy way forward now. Everything will start having ads. Wake up. Listen to 30s ad before using coffee machine. Or let it promote some crap I don't need.

"SMART" appliances = we dont make enough money is soon the way forward

You know... we might come back to this post in a few years and you be like "I told ya!" 😄

It sounds like a joke now (even unthinkable to me that it could happen)... but it might actually happen haha

Can I target based on what's in the fridge?

Run an ad at 2am when they grab a snack:

"Mans really gonna be eating a snack at 2am huh.

Going for the doughnut?

Wtf.

How about you try some of our finest healthier snacks?

2am munchies but healthy!

Order here..."

I'm with you there.

These smart appliances often tout improved energy usage or whatever, but when I did appliance repair work back around 2014, it was always the people with these fancy new appliances who needed them fixed.

All of the appliances in my house have been here since I moved in back in 2013. The house was a rental back then and I don't think these appliances were even new at that time, but they all still work great. I just need to clean the refrigerator coils once a year and not overload the washer. The dryer has broken down twice, but once it was a thermal fuse that blew and I replaced it for $10 and the second time the belt for the barrel slipped off. The dryer is fairly simply built, so it's not an issue for me to repair it when these things happen.

We thought about getting new appliances at one point, but these ones that we have are reliable, so there's no need to replace them.

People in 1970: We will have flying cars in 2025.
Currently: We have fridges displaying ads. 😆

I had a Xiaomi phone that had ads on the built-in utility apps (file browser, etc..). This was the most annoying thing and I ended up blocking it from internet access so it won't show ads. Very annoying nonetheless.

On the other hand...
