In the summer of 1999, the Windows program Napster was released, making it much easier to share and download music. The music was distributed in the mp3 format. Napster was founded by Sean Parker, who later became involved in both Facebook and Spotify.

Record labels were of course not happy with music being distributed for free, and Napster was sued in its debut year. It took about a decade before the music industry seriously adapted by embracing streaming services.

Interestingly, Sony is now suing Napster again – some 26 years later. The Napster name has thus lived on and is currently a kind of music streaming service. According to Sony, Napster has failed to pay $9.2 million in royalties.

Sony created a repayment plan but claims Napster hasn't paid a penny. That's why Napster is now being sued by Sony, who wants $9.2 million in royalties and up to $36 million in damages for copyright infringement.

It's hard not to root for Napster, even though Sony is probably in the right.
