I'm sure many of us here have had to do daily check-ins. There's nothing inherently wrong with these as it's good to catch up with the team.

However, if you're working in a hostile work environment and you're beginning to feel burnt out, it can become harder to do daily check-ins.

If you're in this boat, then I have a few tips for you on how to present your workload during daily check-ins without having to resort to lying (because if they're focused on numbers and tracking, lying won't work anyway).

For the sake of having an example, I'll use someone working for an online marketplace.

Tip #1: List Each Individual Task
Using an online marketplace reviewer as the example, let's say what they do is "just marketplace reviews" and they usually do 10 each day.

Don't just say you did marketplace reviews today. Instead, break it down into individual tasks.

So rather than saying "I did 10 marketplace reviews today", say the following:
  • I checked over the content for 10 listings to ensure they met our quality standards.
  • I responded to 15 separate customer inquires in those 10 threads.
  • I completed 10 marketplace reviews today from start to finish.
Even in a toxic workplace, they usually appreciate hearing the details of what you're doing, and you can show impressive numbers, then this is an opportunity to do that.

Tip #2: Don't Specify Numbers If Your Numbers Are Low
Specifically if you can avoid it. I know that sometimes, there might be a slow day, but if you work for a company where the board directors are out of touch with your specific role, then you they won't be as understanding. All they'll hear is a low number and think you weren't doing enough.

Therefore, if there's not an expectation to say the number of what you did per task (e.g., 2 marketplace thread reviews) when your numbers are low that day, then avoid it entirely.

Instead...

Tip #3: Use Plurals
This is a great workaround for low numbers. So, instead of sayinf, I did 2 marketplace reviews yesterday, just say "I did marketplace reviews yesterday".

But again, don't just stop there. Combine this with top #1 and breakdown your work.
  • I checked over the content for listings to ensure they met our quality standards.
  • I responded to customer inquires in those threads.
  • I completed marketplace reviews today from start to finish.
