Sometimes, you might want to change your name. No problem! Here on Office Outlaw, you can do that yourself once per year (every 365 days).

Your old username is held for 100 years so that nobody can claim it for themselves. At least, not for 100 years, in which case they can claim it.

If you want to change your username sooner for any of the reasons below, you can send a message to an administrator explaining why you need to change it:
  • You used your real name.
  • You don't want your company name/brand in your username.
  • You signed up less than 2 weeks ago.
  • You put something compromising in your username for some reason.
Just know it's up to the discretion of the administration on whether or not they'll change the username early.

You can change your username yourself on the account details page.

Is the old username still visible in the profile after a name change?

Not currently
I checked it before I asked, but assumed his username was changed in another way or something.

Should we allow users to claim usernames that were already in use?
Do you feel we shouldn’t? I definitely think it’s something worth discussing. There are some cases where I can see this being a problem (e.g., a brand changing into a personal account; they wouldn’t want the brand name taken by someone else). Then again, multiple accounts are allowed here, so if someone wanted to claim their old username, they could do it themselves.

What about people coming after a user for having the username of an old scammer that changed it?

I’m not sure if I’ve seen anything like that happen since I started moderating, but it is always a possibility. I think the closest example was one case where someone chose a similar name to a scammer, but that was it.

If anything, I can bump up how long the forum restricts someone from registering a former username. I originally had it set to 10 years when I was adjusting the settings, but I can make longer or shorter.

I think it helps to keep track on who's who, don't it?

Yes, Same Thoughts..

We need username visibility option after name change ..
But at the moment, There isn't this option.

  • Username changes are no longer displayed publicly.
