A bit of a random question but I had an incident the other day in my house where I could hear someone in my backyard. I think it was just some teenagers hopping fences because they went to the next yard quickly but it got my back up and got me thinking about home defence.

What does all of you do for home defence? I guess the obvious answer is a gun but I don’t know if that’s for me.

Also have you ever had to defend your home? How did it go and what happened?

I had a home broken into once when I was a kid and I've had trespassers in my yard a few times. The treaspassers were just kids hopping fences, like what you experienced. The person who broke into the home just broke into the garage and car to steal some stuff.

As for what to do for home defence, it really depends.
  1. Are you indoors or outdoors?
  2. Is the person armed or unarmed? Can't tell?
  3. Is there any indication as to what their intentions might be?
  4. How fast do I think I'd need to react to this situation?
I can tell you what I have and what I'd do, just know that none of this might be for you.

Guns: I have a revolver and hollow point ammunition that I would grab under specific circumstances. However, everyone always defaults to saying "get a gun", but most people I've known who have guns don't know how to use them. Worst of all, some people get target ammunition that would go through a person and potentially a wall or door, which could injure someone out on the street. This is especially a risk if you miss the target.

Guns require maintenance and I also keep mine locked away, which technically means I can't grab it quickly. Don't forget that they're noisy (and using them indoors can be jarring) and they're messy. Then there's another issue with them: if an intruder sees a gun, that might cause them to pull their own weapon out and become aggressive toward you. This might be an intruder who would've otherwise run away, but now feels the need to defend themselves because they see a gun.

Blades: I really don't recommend this, but I actually have several custom-made katanas, a broadsword, and other knives I can quickly grab if I need to. But the reason I don't recommend this is because you really need to practice using these to understand how they can be used for self-defense. In the case of katanas, you often see people on YouTube swinging around a katana like a baseball bat; they don't know how to swing with the sword's curvature, which makes the weapon less effective. Their stances also look like something out of a cheap anime. If you're indoors and you have a hallway, swinging around a katana isn't really practical. I'm not practices with the broadsword or the knives, so I wouldn't grab them.

What your blade is made out of is extremely important. Don't just pick up some $30 mall katana made out of stainless steel: these are decorative and will break on you. There are many choices out there, but that's a whole topic itself.

Katanas and other blades also require maintenance; you need to know how to clean and sharpen a blade. This isn't difficult, but failing to clean it can result in rust.

Unarmed: Weapons seem like an obvious choice to grab, but in most situations, I would prefer to be unarmed just based on my own past experiences.

Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you practice. You can take self-defense classes for guns and unarmed combat, and if it's something you want to learn more about, you need to be able to determine what you're most comfortable with.

I hide in my bed when debt collectors come.

When police comes, just act politely.

And to defend myself from people living at my home, I simply don't speak too much.

Most attackers strike online anyways.

2inches of solid laminated nylon and then machine some brass or metal caps you can just wipe it down after taking out someones knees when they climb fences.

Aslo a umarex t4e and I've imported pepper balls and steel balls from Germany for it. The load is 2 rubber, 1 pepper, 1 steel, 2 rubber and so on.

It's not nice to get shot with that (had a friend shoot me to see if I would stop if shot with it) and I've shot one or two people with it who have taken a closer look at my garage

Mount a couple of big ass sensor motion floodlights that turns on when someone moves around, should scare away 99% of the neighbours cats too.
That’s a good idea and it’s non lethal too. I’ll look into those.

Guns and unarmed just aren’t for me. I think if it came down to it I prefer a weapon.

I always prefer non lethal because I don’t want to accidentally hurt someone too much or get sued because of it. What about a baton?

I didn’t think about this one. I’ll look into that too. Thanks!

@Impulse your husband owns katanas? How did you catch him, I need a tutorial 😂. Maybe he has a single cousin?

So, did it hurt badly, or was it just a nuisance?

Oh it hurt. It made me stop. I got a bruise about the size of a dinner plate from it.

Certainly pissed me off. If I was full in rage mode id possibly keep going but having another 2-3 of them. Nah. The pepper balls you dont want to be near that in a room when they go off.

I only got shot with the rubber steel core ones. The solid steel bearings I got loaded in would really make someone think twice if they kept pushing after the pepper balls.

This is the one I got

Any reason you got the riffle instead of the gun, they seem to pack the same mount of energy in impact? Like the Umarex T4E Impax P68 Set / .68 Kaliber / 7.5 J
Mines 16j you can get upgrade kits for them.

Went with pump action becaus

1. The pump action noise when you walk up to someone doing something they should be.

When I pump it walking up to someone the guy stoped to look wtf the noise was as I shot him lol

2. Was easier to add a flashlight to the rail system.

3. I own shotguns and shoot then a lot and although it's not exactly the same it's a platform I'm more familiar with.

Ok guys you got top notch security any chance I can hire some of you as a hitman?

🤣

Yes, please. I don't want to do ads, I can shoot people no probs.
You can make a guide to make ads for noobs and intermediate for B2C, low ticket and you have customers.

With your insane reaction score it'd sell like crazy, but pricing should be reasonable.

That's not what I was asking about, I know that already
