Has anyone done this? Does it just turn into a bidding war? Do you end up paying more?

I ask because I've never done one of these backorder forms before. A competitor has gone out of business, closed down all above board and that. The website is shut down etc and the domain is due to expire in July. IF the current owners don't renew it, I don't think they will as they seem to have fallen off the plant.

Obviously I want it. Just asking for some advice on the best way to get it... I don't want to be paying a fortune for it, it's not worth that much to me.

Depends on what service you use, some have a fixed price and some do an auction of it, then it can get expensive if there is a lot of interest. I have not done any backorders of domains in years so what service to use is better answered by someone else, @Nargil maybe as active in domains.

Would this be an asset from the Official Receiver if they went bust? Or did they just close down?

Reach out to the owner if possible and get it transferred. Otherwise, if it has decent metrics etc, some numpty will buy it and make it into a link farm guest post site or a PBN.

Yeah they are a direct competitor or was.

I did reach out via my wife's email to the email register but not heard anything

Use Dropcatch.com - they're the fastest, from experience. That's what you want with a dropcatcher. Skip Gdaddy, Namejet, snap.

But the domain he wants to buy, will that domain end up in the auction there? Because there are a few more backorder sites and the domain might end up there in one of those.

Well, that's always how a dropcatch service works. If they get more than one bid for a domain, you enter into an auction - high chance of catching it, high chance of a bidding war, if the domain is decent.

Dropcatch.com is associated with the biggest % of ICANN registrars. So that's your best bet. Namejet and Snap after. We have best experience with DC, but you can use them all if you really want the domain.
Dynadot only if the domain is registered there, otherwise you can skip it.

Otherwise, reach otu via LinkedIN or X/Insta if they have it, much better response than via email - if you are after a direct sale.

They have closed down all the social stuff totally..

I'll try and pre register and see if it goes to auction I don't need it that badly to get into a stupid bidding war, the domain is similar to mine so I just wanted to redirect traffic more than anything

Thanks for the replies
