Well, I am one of your elders and I say don’t respect your elders just because they’re your elders.

It’s a line I heard much growing up but one I think needs to be done away with.

Age isn’t wisdom and there are plenty in my age group who have no business giving advice on life… or anything else for that matter.

Respect them if they show you respect, not just because of their age.

I think repeat just gets confused with being polite.

Biggest thing that pisses me off is people with no children given advice on children.

I think the same.

I had that happen after my first son was born. Aunts and uncles were telling me how he should be raised when they hadn’t had kids themselves.

It’s more excusable with them than a strange but not my cup of coffee all the same.

Yeah as you said its with everything really... But I tend to just be polite and nod with most topics.

The way I see it some problems can be solved with outside thinking and I often enjoy that. A fresh perspective and all that regardless of experience.

I also find as I try to explain everything to a person that doesn't understand I talk my way through and solve the problem myself.

The child one however I find it hard to be polite. I'm not a bite my lip kinda guy lol

Yes sir.

Agreed and agree with someone else that said “be polite” yes I agree with that, but respect.. fuck that, respect is earned not given. I know a lot of elders that are absolute clowns (especially baldy ones) I would never respect.

Not even an elder. He’s only 49 years old. He just looks old.

You can find his birth month and year on the Companies House website. It’s all public.

Yeah even at that he’s my elder we he’s got almost 2 decades on me in terms of age, but yes he definitely looks older.. clearly not wiser though.

Personally (my opinion)

I see that as weak man thinking. You can't earn it if you refuse to give it in the first place. Respect comes from your own strength which is your character and behaviour. You don't need to earn it in order to give it. You should be strong enough to give it in the first place.

There's a difference between not tolerating disrespect and placing ultimatums on it or needing it for your own ego.

Anyhow.

Guys cut the other place bashing out, stop letting them live rent free upstairs. It's OO we all here to move on.

I disagree, I respect myself initially - I don’t respect (perhaps respect means different things to you than it does to me) strangers automatically, I’ll respect my morals and values by being polite to them yeah.. but actually respecting them, nah that takes time and it takes getting to know them.

And the wording there you used I think is a bit skewed:

“You don't need to earn it in order to give it” - Yes I don’t I need to earn it, I already respect myself. It’s others I’m saying need to earn it respect from (that’s just my personal stance) me, I’ve learned over my life to take people as you find them and then get to know them. I was brought up to be polite, have manners, don’t show “disrespect” for no reason and let people show you who they are.

Being nice, polite, courteous and civil is one thing… respect is higher up the ladder for me, thus it takes time for me to actually respect someone in the way that I define respect. That’s just me though.
