Two powerful earthquakes have struck Venezuela, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). They have caused panic in the capital Caracas, where buildings have collapsed.
The death toll after the quake is initially estimated at between 10,000 and 100,000, the USGS said, according to Reuters .
"It is likely that there are many casualties and extensive damage and that the disaster is widespread," the USGS said.
The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, the second had a magnitude of 7.5. They both struck within a minute at locations 45 kilometers apart off the coast of Morón, Venezuela, at depths of 13 and 10 kilometers, respectively, according to the USGS.
The earthquakes are among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century.
The US Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a tsunami warning for the Virgin Islands, and authorities in the Dominican Republic have also issued a warning. A warning was also in place for Puerto Rico, but it was quickly lifted.
People in Caracas evacuated buildings and homes that were swaying. Many were visibly shocked to see entire walls collapse and furniture visible from the streets. In a shopping mall in the city, people began screaming.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello warns of serious situations with collapsed homes in Altamira in Caracas, and urges people to stay outdoors.
Several aftershocks have also occurred. The earthquakes were felt in several states as well as in Colombia, and were felt as far away as the Colombian capital, Bogotá, where alarms were sounded and some residents evacuated buildings as a safety precaution.
