Who else left Discord?

I never figured out discord. Why an IM service needs to have so many complexities? I don't get it.

Discord was never a great alternative to older messengers like Skype. I really wish Skype would make a comeback because that’s probably where I spent most of my time (along with IRC). But I wouldn’t mind forums making a comeback either. At least that would help us.

I can’t even remember the last time I opened Discord... it must have been close to a year now

I still have the app on my phone tho

I agree with everything Discord are doing, if anything I'll be more active

Agree.

Everyone is doing it. Xbox does it, need to verify your ID to continue to use the services. It's all shit.

The only reason for it is DATA; it's one of the last hurdles, everyone was stupid enough to allow phone to use your face to unlock and other companies are missing out on that jucy bit of data. It's NEVER for your safety.

5 years this will be the norm for everything.

What are the alternatives? Closest thing I can see is Element.
There aren't any 1:1 drop in all-in-one replacements that I've found so far, mainly due to a lack of screensharing feature parity. The closest discord-like options are https://stoat.chat/ and https://spacebar.chat/ but neither have functional screensharing.

I admin for a gaming group of around 400 users and we've been discussing a move back to self-hosted options long before these recent changes being implemented. One of the main features commonly used in the group is screensharing your game/window for better coordination in-games and this is the one area Discord shines in. Popular alternatives like Jitsi Meet or Element Call both let you screenshare but mix both the voice and system audio streams into a single stream, and don't let you select individual audio channels so that you can for example mute someones screenshare but not their voice chat. Which is a no-go when you have 20+ people all on a single call with half of them streaming a game.

It seems most screensharing software options that are built into chat-like applications are focused towards work and conference meeting usage.

A second common requirement is PTT (Push-to-talk). Neither Jitsi or Element Call have global PTT functionality, requiring the user to create a global keybind on their host OS to mute/unmute their microphone instead, while not a big deal for our regulars, guests won't likely have that set up and will be an inconvenience to have to tell/help them to set it up each time someone new joins.

So for now we're at a bit of an impasse on the way forward. Tons of great alternatives for the chat and voice side, not much for larger scale screen sharing.
