While I don't do much development on Windows platform anymore, for many years Notepad++ was my go-to app for editing configuration files and light programming (projects that didn't require a full IDE). There are a massive number of features and plugins that help in those areas that the bare bones Windows notepad doesn't have while still being a very lightweight application.

Excuse my ignorance but why use this over just a default notepad program?

It's a godsend to edit files quickly without IDE.
Also it is good if you have large excel files and want to clean it up i.e remove duplicate lines etc.

I didn't realize it was like a more versatile version of notepad.

I used it for 8 years. Last time I think it was 10 years ago when I managed first websites.
Not a good tool.
VSC with AI is the way to go!
