I was casually talking to someone on another forum today and they sent me a link that I didn't recognize.

It was something called a grabify.link.

I didn't click it because they said they were sending me a link to a YT channel they thought I'd like and that wasn't a YouTube link?

So anyway I looked it up and found out that some people send these links to grab more info about you.

I tested it and you apparently don't even need an account to create these links and view the logos!

The date, IP address, country, browser, operating system, user agent, and your ISP all get logged!

I was like "omg why would someone just send me a link to do this???" I blocked that weirdo fast!

Just be careful out there because some people are doing really weird stuff!

Dos attacks via perl and ips captured via php are still a thing? :D

I'm wondering too, but these days it's probably just farming some data.

Interesting tool.

Apparently, Grabify.link allows you to change the domain.

Luckily for you, the person who sent you a link used the default domain, but this is something else to be aware of.

I know this website for a long time now it is useful if u want to find out if someone is saying to be in the location they pretend or not.
I see it a lot used in yputube videos where some YouTubeers try to locate those scammer from india and nigeria that run scams on usa

well..
I was like "omg why would someone just send me a link to do this???"

Especially friends on skype back in 2010. They'd do anything to make fun of other people!

I was 12 years old back then and everyone was trolling each other bombarding their ip address or finding their real address, then ordering pizza.

Yeah, men used to hack my PC quite a bit. Eg some idiot got my ip from Gadu-Gadu (that was mainstream polish instant messenger back then) and then each time I read a book on manners he'd make my computer freeze. So, if you guys think *I'm* the one who's boorish, now you know why - I just fuckin couldn't finish reading that damn book. After couple incidents like these I started hiding my ip with tor lol. But the thing with tor is that it makes everything slow, so I couldn't use it with games. There was this american dude that wanted to marry me or whatever. I met him through american-ukrainian chick that I was hanging out with in Second Life. They were software developers working in a software house. So, he kept complaining about me showing my ip to everyone else and not him (that sounded weird). One day he invited me somewhere in Second Life and there was a built-in radio stream thing. And that leaked my ip. He hacked my computer (again, remotely - it was Linux btw), which I noticed immediately and complained to him. He tried denying, claiming it's a random hack, etc, then gave in and said there isn't anything interesting on my computer 😐. I started bitching and complaining so he wrote a whole fuckin pdf security audit with hardening guidelines for my system and that's how I got a free pentest.

Back in the day, I remember that you didn’t even need that. There was a thing called a Skype resolver. You would just type in the username and get their IP. There was no need to send them a link. We booted each other offline all the time. Funny times.

Probably the most retarded thread I’ve seen in a long time.

Literally no one here knows jackshit about networking.

Yeah, we’re not in 2001 anymore. You can’t just grab someone’s ip and fucking ddos or remote them lmao.

I know nothing about networking and I know you can't do much with someone's ip address these days.
Doesn't take a PhD to know it.

The title is overreaction. I don't even react to this thread with reaction.

Oho, Rolex dude did what he's best at - bragging with no substance. You're too fuckin stiff, we had fun remembering old times.

N+/S+ and CCNP holder w/ ~20y exp. in network administration and infosec consultancy. Am I credentialed enough to chime in on the topic?

Sure, DDOS prevention and mitigation has improved drastically at the residential ISP level in the last 25 years. That doesn't mean I couldn't be an absolute menace to the point your ISP will suspend and/or terminate your contract due to being a repeat source of network disruption and cost.

Poorly configured router, IoT devices, media servers, NAS endpoints? All potential attack surfaces.

L7 vulnerabilities aside. While a very very small piece of the puzzle, your IP addresses can certainly be used in helping build an OSINT profile enabling sophisticated social engineering attacks on you and your family members.

Nonetheless, there are numerous ways to obtain IP and fingerprint information from people, right here on this very forum as well. If you're really concerned about personal OPSEC while browsing the Internet, roll your own VPN. But to dismiss leaking an IP as completely irrelevant is equally retarded.

Free Pentest or not what a weirdo for the way he did it!

Typical guy tbh. Don’t ask for your permission just them doing something to you and expecting you to be thankful about their flex.

And what if I'm behind a dynamic 4G? A mobile connection that changes all the time.
