When you created your account, you may have noticed there's a karma system on your profile.

This is a system used on Office Outlaw mostly just for fun, but it can be used mostly for whatever you want to use it for.

One thing to be aware of is that karma cannot be purchased with real money nor can they be exchanged for real money. So, whilst you can use karma for transfers or exchange it for goods and services, there's no way to "cash out".

How Is Karma Earned?
Karma is earned by the following actions:
  • Creating a poll generates 10 karma
  • Adding tags to threads generates 10 karma per thread tagged.
  • Posting a profile message generates 10 karma
  • Voting in a poll generates 10 karma.
  • Getting a follower generates 20 karma.
  • Following someone generates 10 karma.
  • Getting a thread stickied generates 30 karma
  • Creating a thread generates 30 karma
Someone reacting to your content generates karma dependent on the reaction type.

Credit goes to @Rem for creating this table.

An easy way to remember it is like this: things you do generate 10 karma, things others do to you generates 20 karma, and "major events" that happen generate 30 karma.

How Is Karma Lost?
Karma is lost either through spending them or by negating the action that caused them to be received. For instance, if you lose a star, you'll lose the 50 karma you got from getting it. The same goes for losing a follower costing 20 karma (the same you gain for getting a follower).

Additionally, the following causes karma to be lost:
  • Receiving a notice costs 1,000 karma.
  • Uploading an attachment costs 10 karma. This takes up space on our server and we prefer for members to embed.
  • Donating karma is taxed at 5%. This is just a karma sink.
Think of it this way: if you contribute and engage on the forum, you gain karma easily. However, if you receive any notices for TOS violations, you lose karma.

Donating Karma To Other Members
You're able to give other members karma. You can use this for any reason, including gift giving or transactions if you choose to do so.
Click the "Karma" option on someone's profile and you'll see a "Donate" button.

What Can Karma Be Spent On?
Aside from viewing content between the "charge" code tag, karma can also be spent on cosmetics on the Upgrades page.

Currently, we only have the "Hot Rod" badge, which costs $10 (1000 karma). Note that whilst a dollar amount is displayed, you can currently only purchase this with karma. Yeah, I know, annoying, but we can't change that yet.

Karma can also be spent on gifting other users the Hot Rod badge, along with any other karma-only purchase options we introduce to Office Outlaw.

This is really Interesting - Unlimited credit for the Idea's..

I ❤️ OO

Warnings. Receiving a warning deducts 500 karma from your account.
Doesn't this make warnings public? Can karma get negative?

Also, cam karma be applied retroactively? Every new member is reacher than me 😭 😭

I accounted for that. Negative karma due to warnings does not appear in the transaction log.

Unless someone was really paying attention to a specific member's karma, they wouldn't know the points went down. For all they know, they got something on the upgrades page or donated them. Donations specifically don't show up on the transactions page (I sent you 25 right now just to be sure).
Can karma get negative?
No, that's disabled; it only ever goes to 0.

No, but I'll send you 200 or so in a bit.

No need, it'll probably balance itself eventually. Trophies can only take you so far..

It's mostly based on receiving reactions at the moment, although I need to add something in to encourage creating threads and maybe posts.

I may also need to make some adjustments to all this to prevent abuse. For instance, adding maximum applications within a specified limit period, for example, would discourage someone from just using an alt and liking all of their own posts back to back. It would affect regular users, but they wouldn't really notice it as much.

Charging Others To View Content
You can use the BBCode below to put content behind a karma wall (replace 'X' with the number of karma you wish to charge). This means that users will have to spend karma to view the content. Any karma spent to view this content you posted will be received by you.
Code:
[charge=X]Your content here[/charge]
Bear in mind that rules still apply, so do not put anything that violates our rules behind this paywall. Admins and moderators can still see the content without paying as well.
How much is a maximum charge of karma to view the post? :)

There's no maximum that I'm aware of. I set one to cost 1 million karma.

I finally set it up so that users you refer gets you karma. Read the quote below for the details.
You get 50 karma per referral and extra karma if they upgrade their account, up to a maximum of 1,000 karma.
It doesn't apply retroactively, but I'm going to go through the most referrals leaderboard and give karma out manually proportionate to the amount of karma you would've received.

Edit: All of the karma has been sent out, 50 per referral. Thank you everyone for patient about that.

Also, some of you have asked what you can use karma on. Currently, you can get the hot rod badge for 10k karma on the upgrades page. It says $10, but you can't actually buy it with money. I'll look into possible displaying the karma amount instead of a dollar amount one day, but it seems like it needs a workaround.

It is like good and evil system in video game? You do good things and get +karma and do bad things like warnings and get -karma?

I have much to learn.....

I suppose you could say it is like that! :)

Your account's karma can't go into the negatives though, so somebody can't be OO evil or something like that. It almost sounds kind of funny to enable that, but then we'd just be encouraging some people to be rule-breakers. Some people might even see how negative their karma could get.

Like you said, it's like a game, but we don't want to gamify anything in that manner.

Is there a most gifted karma leader board also?

I'm not sure what the name for gifted could be. Got Most Loaded so maybe Biggest Load Shot :ROFLMAO:

Office Slut Leaderboard?
I like
Can we have?

Can I use Karma to make someone else post more popular?

How would that work? Technically speaking
I am thinking something like this.

@UnusualSubstance I give 100 karma or some other amount then this site could promote whatever he does a bit more for his diet stuff

I just giva karma to posts I like. Don't think auto bumping or boosting with karma is a good move..

It's just meant to be a token type system for shits n giggles

Like auto bump?
Kind or give a bit more popularity to something you want such as share it on social media or other places

Wow, amazing.. Love the use of Karma.. something new strategy. :)
